A view from yesterday. Today, in the same place, they will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street.

Another confused spambot has reached out to me about my book Photography of Emily. I've never written a book by that name. I have reviewed Photographs of Emily by @annalisacrawford.bsky.social (it's v good, by the way). Apparently bots can't tell reviewers from authors. 0 out of 10 again, spambot.

Monday evening's sunset as photographed by my phone
Photograph of a golden sunset. A golden sun sets behind a line of dark trees. Below the trees, a broad line of dark green grass. Above the gold of the sunset the sky divides into gold and blue, a patch of grey/pink clouds stretches across the diagonal dividing line.

Can you tell the difference between the author and her book? AI can't. Today's spambot Pamtastic is reaching out to me re my "book, Poet, novelist and short story writer." She wants to talk to me about "Poet, novelist and short story writer, (and) what inspired you to write it" 0 out of 10, spambot.

Today's spambot is a "famous author" who has seen me on Facebook and wants to connect. As with other famous spambots who have written to me, I've never heard of her. Spambots obviously view fame differently from me.

Spambot Mivela Digitals still thinks my fantasy novel Witchlight is a family history. For the record, despite some negative comments to the contrary, I am not a witch and there are none in my family, that I know of.

Today's spambot, Joy I of Mivela Digitals, scraped all the info on my books to write a long email. Sadly she describes Witchlight as an "intersection of urban paranormal fantasy, witchcraft, magic, family history, ghosts" There are no ghosts in the book and none of my family are witches! 3 out of 5.

Currently all the spambots are sending me nice emails. Not sure whatI've done to deserve such attention, other than write and be published.

Friendly spambot Beder Catreet (aka Bedar Bbgff) has emailed me again to say "The Witchlight Series is genuinely needed" but doesn't say for what. My brain is whirring with unsaid possibilities...

Today's spambot claims to be Beder Catreet (an unusual name in its own right) but its email name is Bedar Bbgff. One wonders if its robot cat wandered across the keyboard keys before the email was sent?

Not your standard library visit. Two phone photos from yesterday's trip to the library.
A photo. Stained glass windows are reflected in a document display case. On view are examples of the correspondence of Sir Cecil Beaton, including a letter from T.S. EliotA wall of dark brown shelves lined with old leather bound books in shades of brown. On the left and right of the photo and above the books is carved wooden decoration.

Phone pic from last night's brief walk from my car to Linton Poetry Society to read a few poems.

While I'm currently getting over a bout of the lurgy, have a random pic of Saturday's poetry Word Salad. No poets were hurt in the taking of this photo (or included within it).
Photograph of a row of tables and chairs. Bright pictures, wall hangings and a mirror are on a white wall. The flow is mottled grey. Two chairs are bright red. One is brown and black. Tables are various shades of brown. Potted plants, plates, glasses and notebooks are visible on two tables. A black iron table lamp glows on the right of the photo. No people are visible

Today, 2 literary agents have "come across my work" and want to know more. Seeing as they didn't want to know anything when I actually submitted, this seems rather unlikely. Also, duplication of approach is a bit of a give away. Silly spambots - less is more, didn't you know?

Next spambot claims to be following up from Salky Literary Management except: 1. she calls it Stalky, 2. I have never submitted to the agency, 3. she can't congratulate me on subsequently self publishing as I have never self published. All my books are traditionally published. Silly spambot.

A photo from yesterday evening's walk on the way to a poetry reading
Photograph of large wooden door and surrounding stone arch. To the left of the arch are red bricks with a pale mortar surround. A small porter's door within the left had side of the main door is open and through it can be seen a flagstone path, a parallel open wooden doorway and another stone arched doorway in the distance in which two people are visible. A gold and blue coat of arms is on the main door. A more elaborate coat of arms can be seen above the distant stone archway.

Word Salad poetry night is taking place in Cambridge on Saturday 12 September at Marvin's in Mill Rd. Thea Lungu is headlining. I'll be reading a poem or two.
Poster for Word Salad in Cambridge on 12.09.2026 at Marvin's. Main text is in black. Word Salad is spelled in cut green cucumbers. In the centre of the poster is a circular, blue tinted, head and shoulders photo of a smiling woman with black, curly, shoulder length hair. She is wearing red framed glasses, a silver necklace and a black top.

I like the idea of the book, but remembering Eagleton's lectures and noting the reviewer says the book is dense, I will have to sample it before I commit.

Today Ennis Book Club confuses Elderlight with the whole Witchlight series, & Samantha Downing is curious about when I contributed to or helped shape Ink Stains Vol 6. As I was the editor of the anthology, some naughty spam bot hasn't done its homework properly. 2 silly spam bots for the price of 1.

Today's spambot is Pilar Ramírez Tello. Pilar wants to translate Elderlight into Spanish by way of introducing Spanish speakers to the Witchlight Series. Trouble is, Elderlight is the last book in the trilogy. Not such a great introduction, then. Maybe AI isn't that intelligent?

Last Thursday I read at Linton Poetry Society. This is a photograph of yours truly in mid- read as taken by the excellent poet Sudeep Sen. #poetry
Photograph of poet J.S Watts reading at Linton Poetry Society. She is standing behind a mid-brown wooden lecture bearing the sign "Linton Poetry Society". The poet is wearing pale blue jeans and a green, long-sleeved top plus reading glasses. Her below-shoulder length hair is brown. She is looking up, her left arm also raised, with her hand pointing up and towards her face.

Today's silly spambot has again written to me as all the authors of an anthology in which a short story I wrote appears. Apparently it can help us find our tribe. I thought we constituted one in our own right. It also hasn't sussed that for an anthology it's best to contact the publisher. Silly bot.
