Michael Rainville spent decades at a publicly funded patronage job because he's a Rainville, which makes it funny that he's now banging the drum for maximum public sector layoffs.
"What I don't understand is if you're gonna lay off [people], why don't you lay off until you get down to 4% [or] 5%?” Rainville said of property tax increases. “Nobody wants to touch that."

“This is painful,” Rainville added.

$300,000 is not worth the risk we open ourselves up to as a city for partnering with the federal government on this grant with the stated purpose of its funding. Under Trump’s authoritarian regime, any partnership with the federal government deserves extra scrutiny, and this doesn’t pass the test.

Today I voted against contracting with the drone company Skydio and I was proud the City Council voted down working with a company that contracts with ICE. Metro Surge was a test of our constitutional rights. Opening up the door to further erosions of our civil liberties would be a massive mistake.

ICE murdered multiple people in the last week, and Tom Homan said in June they arrested the most people ever in the history of the agency. Yesterday’s Minneapolis ICE flight had 45 detainees which was the highest single day total since February 4th. ICE never left & your neighbors still need you.

Another ICE murder in Maine this morning. I’m not sure what other crimes against humanity people need to see them commit to understand that no local government should have any contact or association with them, and certainly shouldn’t be using the same drone surveillance company as them.

The drone company Skydio also contracts with ICE, which for any reasonable person would be a non-starter after Operation Metro Surge. It makes no sense to risk handing over surveillance footage of Minneapolis residents to ICE after they’ve spent the year murdering & kidnapping Minneapolis residents.

Using the official City of Minneapolis account this way is disgusting. Not only is this content dehumanizing, but the account continues to be politicized in support of the Mayor. It’s a massive disservice and liability for the City to have no avenues for official nonpartisan information anymore.

Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the ways power holds on. How it held on through sharecropping, redlining, & Jim Crow laws. How it continues to hold on through the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery except as punishment for a crime, mass incarceration, and the gutting of the Voting Rights Act.

Hard to believe it was just one month ago (May 13th) that the mayor's wealthiest supporters who run the PAC "All of Mpls" were scolding the city council for embarrassing the city by even contemplating a rejection of Brian O'Hara as police chief.
We face the same challenges with respect to public safety. While the MPD, under the leadership of Chief O’Hara and Commissioner Barnette, continues to make great strides in implementing MPD reforms, rebuilding the police force, and demonstrating impressive leadership, the majority on the City Council appears to want to destabilize and endanger this progress by denying the Mayor’s reappointments of Commissioner Barnette and Chief O’Hara.

Denying these appointments would not only be an embarrassing example to the world of chronic municipal disfunction, sending negative messages to all who may want to live in, do business in, and work in Minneapolis, it would be a huge set back to all of the progress realized so far—a set back that would take years to correct.

Observing ICE activity is not a crime. This is another attempt from Trump’s authoritarian regime to try and suppress free speech and dissent. But we will never stop exercising our constitutional right to legally observe the federal government’s illegal activities.

Reminder that Frey renominated this guy 21 short days ago & had his machine all wound up to punch lefties for questioning it: www.startribune.com/ohara-promis...
From the Star Tribune: David Douglass, the court-appointed independent evaluator, said while his goal was to hold the whole city accountable rather than focus on any specific personnel, O'Hara failed to effectively
execute the consent decree. "Often the chief was not an asset to that process [of implementing the settlement agreement], and some of the criticisms that we make in our report are really directly
attributable to the chief," Douglass said

Frey says O’Hara broke trust, couldn’t continue as chief after meddling in investigation

From yesterday's All of Mpls email. Here come the "petty politics".
Screenshot from email

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, residents and visitors to Minneapolis this summer will find that public safety concerns are returning to pre-pandemic levels. Thanks to Chief O’Hara, the MPD welcomed dozens of new officers this month keeping us on track to return to the mandated minimum level of 733 officers by 2027. While this is an important milestone, it is imperative that this positive public safety trajectory is not derailed by unconstructive, petty politics. Please stay tuned for information about upcoming hearings regarding the reappointment of Chief O’Hara and other public safety matters. There is still much work that needs to be done to both rebuild and reform the MPD and we will need all hands on deck.

It was a massive error in judgment for Mayor Frey to nominate Chief O’Hara while there were active investigations into very serious accusations that had been rumored for months. This is what happens when you prioritize optics and political expediency over governance and accountability.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 7, 2026
MINNESOTA
STATEMENT by the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association on today's ICE activity and political reaction in
Minneapolis
ASSOCIATION
(St. Paul, Minn.) Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association Interim Executive Director David Titus said,
"The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association stands firmly behind law enforcement officers, accountability under the law, and the safety of every Minnesota community.
Irresponsible, reckless rhetoric from political leaders attacking law enforcement has real and dangerous consequences for officers on the street. When officers are vilified, demonized, or used as political props, it fuels hostility, emboldens bad actors, and puts lives directly at risk.
MPPOA calls on leaders to stop the inflammatory language and respect the legal and investigative process."

11 City Council members sent a letter to the Charter Commission ahead of their meeting where they will consider moving forward with significant changes to the appointment process for city department heads. We can’t support taking away council approval & public input in the appointment process.
We, the undersigned Members of the Minneapolis City Council, appreciate your continued work to modernize the City Charter.
We recognize the substantial effort reflected in the current packet of proposed amendments and share your commitment to ensuring the Charter remains clear, effective, and responsive to the needs of our city.
The Council supports collaborating with the Charter Commission on a package of technical and clarifying amendments. We see the opportunity to improve consistency, eliminate ambiguities, and enhance overall usability, and we are ready to engage constructively and in good faith to advance these technical amendments through the ordinance process.
However, and after careful consideration, a majority of Council Members have concerns about the substantive proposal related to the appointment process for charter department heads. At this time, Council is not prepared to support those changes and believes existing provisions should remain in place pending further discussion between the Council and Mayor. Accordingly, we respectfully request that this one provision be omitted from the comprehensive packet of technical amendments at this time.
The undersigned Council Members, constituting a majority of the body, believe this issue is both substantive and substantial, striking at the very core of a system of shared powers. The Council's role in confirming mayoral appointments is fundamental to maintaining balance and accountability between legislative and executive branches. Any modification to this authority carries significant implications for governance, policy alignment, and accountability. We therefore ask the Commissioner to separate this issue from the package of technical amendments. We are committed to participating in considering a future proposal on the appointment provision in partnership with the Charter Commission, the Mayor's Office, and the public to ensure any future proposal reflects a well-informed and broadly considered
