Just woke up to this news and I’m still a little bit in shock. He was a great editor and a great man. Working for him for seven years remains the greatest privilege of my professional life. Such sad news.

Malcolm Edwards was definitely on our short list of “people we didn’t know well who had a profound influence on our life anyway.” For several reasons, but first because he phoned us in late 1983 to say we should run for TAFF and that he’d pull together the necessary UK nominators. A great editor.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

All of this. My and @tnh.nielsenhayden.com’s mobility diminishes with each passing year. The day approaches when we simply won’t go to Worldcons, because the evidence is that Worldcon, for all the admirable things about it (and there are admirable things) is unreformable on this issue.

after they are finished with trans people, and disabled people, and autistic people, they'll come for adhd people, and go right on through the list. fascism is a fire that cannot be quenched. once everyone is a cishet white male, they'll start burning people for being short, or having webbed toes.

Note that (as @tkingfisher.com knows) it’s perfectly possible for a book to not “earn out” and still be modestly profitable. Or in some cases, very profitable. I mention it because people are frequently unclear on this point.

I think the rationalist community pretty regularly forgets that the goal of development is not "reaching the stars", it is "human flourishing". A thing that helps you reach the stars at the expense of that is bad and should be discontinued

It’s world narcolepsy day! If you fall asleep in public, on transit, so much that it’s a bit with your friends, do yourself a favor and ask your doctor about getting an MSLT. That is not normal behavior and don’t wait until you total your car (like me when I was 17) to get diagnosed!

Disability support policy is a giant test of the principle “Innocent Until Proven Guilty”. Systems that gatekeep disability benefits to prevent supposed grifting are betraying that principle by deciding it’s worth making many innocents struggle & starve to stop a few bad actors. Same with welfare.

No system is perfect, yes some people might "cheat", but would you rather people who desperately need these things go on suffering so you can be SURE you're not being duped? Why is you not being duped so important that other people have to die for it?

Fascinating piece on a period I was very much around for. Small point of information: That “uncredited” cover on an issue of Avedon Carol’s fanzine BLATANT was by British artist Arthur “ATom” Thomson, and is indeed an elegant caricature of Avedon.

As a footnote, if a mechanism exists to deprive ANY group of civil rights—no matter how reviled they are, and by however many—then that mechanism WILL eventually be weaponized against YOU. You do not have to be trans or pro-trans to be against deprivation of anyone's rights. (PS: I am pro-trans.)

In retrospect, we’ll see the key trend of the era was an elite revolt by the very rich, politicians and media employees against the idea there should be *any limits at all* on their behaviour, up to and including strangers publicly criticising them. All presented as The Wisdom Of The Average Punter.
one of those things I feel a little ashamed about for taking so long to clock is that rich people are surrounded by yesmen and consequently delude themselves into thinking their predictable bigotries reflect some suppressed yearning of the Common
Man.

Agree. I lived in NYC at the time. So many little corner shops run by Indians and Pakistanis nearly went out of business because non-immigrants judged the shopkeepers by their skin color and labeled them all “enemies”. The great unity people keep talking about was not so all-inclusive as they claim.

This is not a “narcoleptic episode.” If Trump had narcolepsy we would know about it from other symptoms he does not display. Using “narcoleptic” as a cheap adjective to mean any kind of sleepy is damaging to actual living narcoleptics, who have enough problems already.
