Dennis Hastert died. Who's that? He was the longest serving Republican Speaker in history, a registered sex offender and a serial child molester. But somehow most Americans don't know about him. Anyway, he's in hell now.

Side-by-side comparison of three social media posts announcing the death of former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert at age 84. On the left, Fox News posts, “BREAKING: Dennis Hastert, longest-serving Republican House speaker, dead at 84,” above a photo of Hastert raising his hand at a microphone. In the center, CBS News posts, “Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who represented Illinois for two decades in Congress and was later jailed for violating banking laws, has died,” above a photo of Hastert walking through the U.S. Capitol. On the right, MeidasTouch posts, “Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker in history, has died at 84. Hastert admitted in federal court to sexually abusing boys he coached as a high school wrestling coach. A federal judge called him a ‘serial child molester.’ He was a registered sex offender.” The MeidasTouch post includes an image of Hastert speaking from the House floor with a C-SPAN chyron identifying him as Speaker of the House.

#ResistanceRoots Johnny Appleseed was born on this day in 1774 in Leominster, Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was a real person, and he planted a lot of apple trees, but he mainly sold them to make hard cider. He was also a pacifist, altruistic, revered nature and respected Indigenous tribes. /1
Johnny Appleseed. The romanticized image of Johnny Appleseed handing out sweet, shiny apples for children to bite into is a myth popularized much later. In the 1800s, the American frontier ran on alcohol. Water supplies weren’t safe to drink. Because fermenting killed off pathogens, hard cider became the primary daily beverage for entire families — even children. The average frontier settler drank 10.5 ounces of hard cider per day. Because Appleseed refused to graft trees due to his religious beliefs, his apples were genetically unpredictable, small and bitter. Known as “spitters” because you’d spit them out if you tried to eat them raw, these tart apples were perfect for pressing into hard cider. Resourceful frontier families used them for other staples as well, including apple butter, applesauce and livestock feed, and used a process called “freeze distillation” to make applejack. Note, however, that Appleseed rarely sold apples. He sold the young saplings and the land itself.

Appleseed was born John Chapman against the backdrop of the American Revolution. His mother died in childbirth two years later while his father was away fighting the British, leaving John and his older sister alone. When his father returned, he remarried Lucy Cooley, and they had 10 children. /2
Johnny Appleseed birthplace site in Leominster, Mass. The house the Chapmans lived in — which still stands today — is believed to be one of the oldest structures in Western Massachusetts. Like most homes of that era, it featured low ceilings, tight rooms and a massive central hearth used for cooking and heating. Inside this modest structure, the family size grew exponentially. Nathaniel brought John and his older sister Elizabeth from his first marriage. Then, he and his new wife Lucy proceeded to have 10 more children over the next two decades. Privacy was nonexistent. Sleeping arrangements involved children piling into shared lofts or trundle beds, packed tightly together to stay warm during brutal winters. The atmosphere wasn’t just loud. It was intensely stressful. His father’s post-war financial ruin cast a shadow over the home. Money was scarce, and the family had to rely on bartered labor and thriftiness just to keep everyone fed. im only a bit into this longread and it's already a brutal accounting of the Reconstruction rollback being carried out by the neoconfederates on the Court like, this is a deliberate effort by opponents of multiracial democracy to disempower and degrade--again. different century but same shit
screenshot of a three-paragraph excerpt from the quote-skeeted article, with the final sentences of the third paragraph highlighted in grey, from "and now" onwards. excerpt reads as follows:

When he appeared before the state Senate that day to testify against the new redistricting plans, he was joined by three other veteran Black politicians. Although Fields, a 63-year-old lawyer, has a reputation as an even-keeled consensus builder, he grew emotional as he spoke.

“To me, it is personal,” he told the Senate committee. “Since Reconstruction, Louisiana has elected four African Americans to Congress. And you’re looking at all of them. Four.” Even though nearly a third of Louisiana’s population is Black.

“You said something very profound,” state Sen. Gary Carter Jr., an African American Democrat from New Orleans, told Fields. “From the 1870s all the way through [the] present, just you four gentlemen—that’s it. And now this body wants to reduce that. ‘We want to cut it. That’s too many.’ How do we not be outraged?”
