They Might Be Giants in NYC, 2001 A McSweeney’s event that started late because Dave Eggers forgot the projector. I saw Chris Ware read a comic strip, Mike Doughty play solo, and Dave Eggers ask if there was any Park Slope in the house, but was too tired to stay for TMBG.

Terry Callier at the Phoenix Festival, 1996. I didn’t know who he was yet. Looking at the poster a few years was like a punch in the gut. Same festival I wandered away from David Bowie’s headlining set because I thought he was kinda dull. Can’t remember who I saw instead.

Tom Waits in Vancouver, 1999 Having dropped out of school, worked an array of dispiriting retail jobs for years and then moved to go back to school, I decided to be mature and not skip my first class to stand in line to buy tickets at the student centre. After class they were sold out.

Sebadoh in Vancouver, 1993. Finished a summer program at the university and was going to hang around Vancouver for a week and see shows. While packing up I walked into a supposedly empty dorm room and found my boyfriend hooking up with someone else. I fled the city in tears that day.

Sigh. Using some random YouTuber’s ‘analysis’ of a lightweight author’s use of AI on his podcast scripts just shows we’re all so stupid now that it really doesn’t matter if AI makes us stupider.

The UCP has been in power for 51 of the last 55 years but according to Danielle Smith it's the family who arrived six months ago that is wrecking the province.

Just wrote this to a very young journo I've been working with, he is learning to pitch: So like... picture the editor as a person whose train is leaving the station in two minutes and you are standing with them on the platform trying to explain something.

#MWE Day 4 Various Artists - The Best of Sacred Steel Found myself on the Arhoolie Foundation’s Sacred Steel archives, about the House of God in Florida and their steel guitar worship tradition. This album why I follow ideas to odd places - there could be something amazing at the end of it

#MWE day 3 Omar Sosa & Seckou Keita - Transparent Water A generally quiet and spare album of traditional African instruments and Sosa’s jazz piano combined into new shapes. Often minimalist and a bit experimental, always gorgeous. Another great find.

Keep in mind, as #MWE coincides with Black History Month, please be sure to include albums by Black artists in your picks. That has always been one of the exercise's core tenets, and I promise you will find some new favorites in doing so.

#MWE Day 2 Omar Sosa - SENDAS An icon of world music that I am very under-familiar with. The core of this album is a series of quiet & beautiful improvised piano pieces, pulling in minimalist percussion that expands the sound. Love this.

#MWE 2026 - Day 1 Clipping - Dead Channel Sky (2025) Billed as “Experimental Hip Hop” this leans on 90s UK Drum & Bass with lots of found sounds thrown in and ultra rapid rapping which is both impressive and tiresome. So much perfect enunciation, so little point to it all.

#MWE Day 10 (on day 13) ScHoolboy Q - Blue Lips. Fast forward ten years from Oxymoron and this is good, but I think I like Oxymoron more, probably it sounds both modern and familiar to my ears, where this might be too new for my untrained ears.

In the short film One Week, Buster Keaton builds a mail order house. However, his rival sneaks in and changes the number on all the pieces so it goes together wrong. A perfect joke, no notes.

#MWE day 9 (on day 12) ScHoolboy Q has an intelligent, aggressive style that feels authentic and uncompromising even when the music is catchy as hell. I love Collard Greens, don’t love Studio. Apparently both songs were big hits at the time, but I’m ten years behind so they’re new to me.

#MWE Day 8 (on day 11) I like Blues, in that vague way that just about everyone likes Blues music. But I only *love* a tiny subset - trance-like country blues, vocals with a haunted edge. Music that balances unstudied rawness with tremendous skill. Basically, I love this Junior Kimbrough album.

MWE day 7 (on day 10) Jesse Mae Hemphill was a huge talent, tapped into a regional blues tradition that’s inseparable from her personal lineage. My personal tastes veer away from boogie-style and more to sad, droney Blues, so I liked this less than I probably should

#MWE Day 6 (on day 10) Saw this on @awnothimagain.bsky.social’s MWE and thought it sounded like exactly my thing, and I was right. I love this so much I’m genuinely upset to have missed it for so long. Hypnotic and droney, with the spectral, timeless quality of the best country blues

#MWE Day 5 (on day 9. I’m getting there) There’s some genuinely good stuff here. The country/roots-inflected tracks are the strongest, and serve his warm, distinctive voice the best. Variety is this album’s weakness - the generic pop-rock and Imagine Dragons soundalike tracks drag it down.

#MWE day 4 (on day 9) Having grown up in the age of Zamfir, I’m very suspicious of any music that goes flute-first, so this made me anxious from the opening notes. It won me over at the album’s midpoint (and highlight) ‘I’ll Do Whatever You Want’. The layers emerged as I opened up to it.

#MWE day 3 (on day 8) Family Affair and No More Drama are enough for this album to plant its flag as a classic, but it’s honestly pretty uneven and most of the tracks that aim for inspirational land in generic platitudes.

#MWE day 2 (but on day 8) Essentially the same sound as What’s the 411? but the strength is in her personality emerging in the songwriting

#MWE day 1 (it’s day 8 but whatever The worst part of #MWE is revealing your shameful blind spots. This hits all the points of a classic soul album - huge voice, harmonies, raw emotion and groove - and then added hip hop to reinvent the whole genre.

I gotta say, Americans - or Americans who comment on NYT articles - don’t seem like they’re getting it. You’re losing your country and still sitting around calling Donald Trump a toddler? It’s a little late to be acting like he’s a temporary nuisance.
