Geordie conveys both his sense of wonder at the technology and possibilities of AI and his concern of the potential impact on mathematicians. He echoes the thoughts of many mathematicians: that maths is more than just proof - it is about providing human understanding of the mathematical world.

The triangles in this image are hyperbolic, and even looking at them, you can see why they would make the rule go a bit awry! But they’re not just artistic, hyperbolic geometry informs things like Einstein’s theory of relativity, or even the Internet!

Spherical geometry actually does apply to us, because our planet is a sphere. We just don’t notice because we are so small compared to Earth. So if we draw a triangle and measure its angles, the amount by which the sum exceeds 180 degrees is so tiny that we can't detect it.

As food is transported, it is shaken up and the larger items move a little, leaving gaps that smaller bits of the muesli can slip into. So even though it feels like the big bits should sink, they actually rise to the top - and leave you with a bowl full of brazil nuts.

Exponential growth means that something is growing at a rate proportional to its size. E.g. you have a bacteria that splits into two, an hour later those bacteria split into two… At the nth hour, there will be 2 raised to the n organisms. (Video by E.J. Stewart, R. Madden, G. Paul and F. Taddei.)
