been playing dressmaker!! here's my little review if you're curious. very forgiving and easygoing game that prioritizes your creative freedom.

been playing that new dressmaker game recently! i quite like it.

the primary joy of the game is designing dresses of course, but the main gameplay element is precision. the game gives you many opportunities to be as precise as you can (sewing a seam right on the line, lining up all the pattern pieces on the fabric just so) - while also letting you reset and try again if you mess up. it's extremely forgiving. maybe that's not to everyone's gamer tastes (a good friend of mine raised an eyebrow that you can put fabric back that you've already cut), but i find that in a game where the act of getting everything perfect is the fun, it's nice that you can go back and try again to be as precise as you can. maybe that's just me glad my perfectionism isn't ruining my gameplay experience.

another reason i think it's extremely forgiving of ctrl+zing is that your primary color/fabric design is extremely rudimentary - as in, solid color blocks in your sketchbook. when you bring patterns and fabric type and 3D models into the mix, the dress often looks quite different than you'd visualized. i think that there was a choice not to put resources into making another preview system, and thus ease in undoing your work and trying something else makes sense. that's just me theorizing, and maybe we can disagree on that, but i don't think it breaks the game even if you find it a bit silly that we can seamlessly re-integrate cut fabric into its yardage.

and of course the most important reason - the game wants to encourage you to have fun and feel free to experiment with making a design that you're pleased with. feeling stuck in a choice because you've already cut the fabric isn't conducive to that. there's a ton of wiggle room because they put in a bunch of options for fabric and pattern and want you to have the freedom to utilize it.

the customer art is very cute and the interactions are charming - i'm not a bridgerton person but if i was i'm sure i'd be going crazy, it feels very that. i'm enjoying the cast of characters they've set up. the characters all know each other (or come to know each other) and ask for dresses for intersecting occasions. there's mini-arcs!

the customer requests tend to have enough wiggle room that you don't have to feel super constrained by theme preferences, as cuts, fabric, and accessories can all contribute heavily to the clients' desires. you can still meet the requirements even if you don't use the most optimal bodice cut, for example. again, the point is to make a dress you're pleased with, so this makes sense.

the requests aren't timed, so you can mess around and just freely make your own dresses to sell (or gift to the customers). fulfilling requests gives you more patterns, fabrics, and accessories, however, so doing the main story and side missions gives you more to play with.

i do think it would be fun if they could implement a "hard mode" where cuts and stitches are more permanent (and your budget is tighter, and there's time limits, etc etc) - i don't know if i'd personally play it, but i'm sure there are those who'd really enjoy it! as it stands it's a very easygoing experience. i'm having a lot of fun making dresses.
