That's fine, I don't see their usefulness and certainly don't think that whatever utility can be eked from them was worth the costs and externalities

Except there is not, because software is finished (there are no breakthrough frontiers left). So the revolution is coding faster to make the bossman more money with slop

You cannot have "rigorous" anything with LLMs

Ah so it's starting now? A revolution in software, any minute now? Like how Elon keeps going to Mars any minute now?

Translation: it generates so much garbage that the review process gets clogged as actual people have to waste time checking the slop

I will say that AI boosters said this in march 2026 as well, and at every stage before and since, and I must ask: where is it? Where is all the revolutionary new software? Where is all the groundbreaking stuff? That's right, it's not there. Wasn't in march 2026 and won't appear with agents

It's 'Police Nationale', they report to the ministry of the interior and not to him. There is municipal police in France but they have a smaller mandate and can't be deployed for crowd control etc. It's a cool Vichy regime (i.e. fascist) relic..

I'm telling you guys, you gotta put killcodes in the games you make now and hold them hostage. Day 0 patch set to automatically apply and delete everything if you aren't there to manually pause it. Go full Pandora Tomorrow. Your bosses don't know anything about coding, they can't fix it!

A real shame that Plex has also become such a piece of trash (proprietary, increasingly premium/paid for) as it's the easiest one to share with non-technical users

This is of course the Orwellian goal of the AI industry--to pollute information/knowledge "tens of millions of Americans who use chatbots are increasingly likely to receive answers manipulated by Parscale on behalf of the Israeli government"

I’m not a culture critic but this obsession with rebooting things is a sign of deep malaise. Let’s just cultivate new things. Nobody is going to be improving on Point Break.

This comes after Deadline revealed in December that it was developing a series based on the iconic Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves surf heist thriller.

I'm just a computer science guy reading this discussion but I think what Jacob is trying to convey is that this isn't a *philosophical* issue, it's a *technical* one. The technical foundations tell us what they do, and reasoning isn't a part of it (our brains, reading language, attribute that bit)

It is very rich that these people are suggesting there has been a "death of expertise" when the technologies and institutions they promote are premised on just that.

Data centers are providing only things that people really don't like - more inequality, more impunity, more Internet (people use it but also hate it! it's true!) - while not really providing a proper buyout. What would be the reason that people *would* support data centers in their back yards? (2/2)

The funny thing about prompt engineering is that the word engineering implies measurable tolerance margins for error and the word prompt implies no such thing

“As Golumbia makes clear over & over throughout Cyberlibertarianism: the problem with digital technology is not that it has been captured by the right-wing, the problem with digital technology is that it is inherently right-wing.” With AI, understanding this truth grows more important by the day.

A consistent pitch by the makers of ai wearables is that they solve the problem of getting to know your child. www.businessinsider.com/parents-brea...
Molly, who runs a startup to help parents book activities for kids, is willing to use AI for logistics, like meal planning or sorting through her email to surface the most important messages from their daughter's school. Sean, who works in tech sales, wants to go further. He has his eyes on Omi necklace, an AI wearable that listens in on your day and includes a feature called Parent Whisperer. It records and analyzes interactions between parent and child, logging things like school assignments and supplies to order. The device also picks up on tone, alerting parents when their kid may be unhappy — registering everything from "from toddler tantrums to teenage mood swings," per its ad copy — and offering "expert-backed guidance" on how to respond.

The de-skilling is most obvious, how could it not happen when you outsource thinking to the machine? You ask for evidence but I suspect you've not actually seriously thought critically about these things at all yourself

And we struggle to procure water and RAM chips for genuinely useful stuff while the plagiarism machines suck it up.. to what end? Information is destroyed as these are lossy compression machines that do not guarantee the accurate reproduction of data. Meanwhile their owners shred books to feed them

Many objections are self-evident if you think about them. LLMs currenly are a pure tool of capital, built on stolen labor, used to de-skill and control workers. The resources required are staggering for.. what exactly? while at the same time we struggle to keep our electrical grid operating

Tim Nethermans @plakaap.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
The same challenge could be put to you, as you don't bring any evidence either but simply rapid fire a bunch of claims. You also bring a tremendous amount of arrogance and condescension which leads me to believe that any evidence (I am a computer scientist fwiw) probably wouldn't convince you?

LLMs are not suitable as search tools and if they outclass Google it's because Google has degraded their algorithm for advertising purposes

The thing making it a cancer are the very severe externalities it brings including but not limited to: sheer waste of resources, loss of useful search, destruction of skills, knowledge and information, loss of a free and open internet, damage to FOSS ecosystems, shifting yet more power to bosses

By the way you know that the reason so many Koreans were killed is because top brass (mostly air force, read: MacArthur) were obsessed with "strategic bombing" and thought they could demonstrate that they could win any conflict if they just bombed hard enough? Turns out it doesn't work, lol, oh dear

Even the most grizzled veterans of WW2 who had seen the most atrocious shit recoiled in horror at the scale of the slaughter the US inflicted in Korea. There was no precedent, nothing was left standing, a deranged bloodbath of unimaginable scale. Insane war crimes. There can be no justification.
