This week at a museum I learned the Roman Empire had challenge coins. This is a bronze medallion of Commodus (177 - 192 AD), dressed as Hercules, that he gave as collectible gifts to friends and government lackeys.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: ROBOT & FRANK (2012). When an elderly father with dementia is given a helper robot by his estranged children he instead uses the mechanical assistant to return to his life of cat-burglary. A quiet, charming story of keeping active with hobbies and friends.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (1992). Fenimore Cooper's native adventure serial adapted into a sprawling epic romance like Hollywood cranked out in the 90's. Bosoms heave, landscapes walked across and the orchestral score blasts you into emotions. Your heart WILL go on.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: VIOLENT ENDS (2025). Yet another hillbilly crime/revenge drama filled with brooding, rifles, wicked kinfolk, drugs, obligatory hunting scene, squibs and a moody score. HBO used to crank these out in the 90's. Now an endangered species.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: BRING THEM DOWN (2024). A sheep farmer with a dark past gets to feuding with his neighbors over a pair of stolen rams. Another hillbilly crime drama where gruff white men brood for an hour and then aim guns at each other, but this time in the backwoods of Ireland.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: THE VILLAGE (2004). Hold up, let me finish. Watch it on mute with the musical soundtrack on and the film gains about 15 I.Q. points as you contemplate the last era of Hollywood production design and lighting craftsmanship.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: ONLY THE ANIMALS (2019). Rashomon en Francais. A murder mystery set in the rural French countryside told in nonlinear multiple POV. Saw it in theaters years ago and the mid-movie twist was one the funniest reveals I've ever experienced. Demands an American remake.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: THE KING (2019). Sometimes a good movie slips through Netflix's content factory. A dour, gritty reimagining of Shakespeare's HENRY IV and V that doesn't quite make its point but hits the right 'prestige' notes. The musical score is a secret treasure.
