San Francisco novelty shop, 1947, Fred Lyon. Every large city in America had a few tiny novelty shops downtown where you could buy all kinds of trivial items ranging from metallic cigarette cases to whoopee cushions. #SanFrancisco

Famous SF noir photo resonates with anyone who ever just once in their life roamed around North Beach after bars closed at 2am. (Fred Lyon, Castle Street between Union and Green, 1950s.)

How London looked when I first visited in 1961. You climbed to the top of the dome of St. Paul's, then the highest place to view the city, further up a steel ladder to the top of the lantern, where you stuck your head through a sort of large overturned bucket with small glass windows. #london

Some random photos taken by Mitch Manitou at the San Francisco Zine Fest last Sunday. The annual event was held in the old Hibernia Bank at 1 Jones Street and has seldom been so well attended. Masks were mandated by management. #zinefest #sfzinefest

This photo comes from a Jilala Art Fund webpage supporting the work of San Francisco artist James E. Tressler aka JET - but known to everyone as Jilala - who died in San Francisco in 2024. A lifelong resident of this city, Jilala was a performer and artist-in-residence with the Cockettes.

Three Persian archers excavated at Darius' palace at Susa, now at Pergamon Museum, Berlin. The robes are made with wooden stamps inked and pressed onto the cloth, a technique employed with traditional Indian paisley fabrics favored by San Francisco hippies in the 1960s. #Persia #Iran

I could never understand the beauty cult surrounding Betty Grable, Jane Russell, Lana Turner, etc. One look from Lauren Bacall and she just withered you. She could handle any situation, and her voice was somewhere between a purr and a growl. #hollywood #filmstars #movies

Minoan drinking mugs, 1650-1500 BC, Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, Crete. When I was a young animal, people drank coffee with every meal in cups and saucers. I forget at what point in the 1960s everyone reverted to Minoan mugs. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. #bronzeage #antiquity

H stood up for academic freedom largely because, as opposed to Columbia, it was in a financial position to do so, and because Garber, unlike his predecessor, sensed the moment. Underplayed amidst the adulation are several significant H budget cuts that ensued.
