A ghost and a spearman

A skeletal female ghost gives inaudible directions to a spear-wielding man in light armor, half-mask, helmet, and red cloak, kneeling among winding roots.

Real talk before the weekend. S.P.I.R.I.T. Issue 4 is only happening because you made it. Every backer, every share, every "my kid loved this" note added up to a real book. Small press runs on exactly that. Thank you. Who is the first person you would hand a comic to?

Small confession from S.P.I.R.I.T. Issue 4 research: I have gone all the way down the Mothman rabbit hole and I regret nothing. Point Pleasant, the sightings, the whole mythology. It is perfect comic fuel. So tell me, who is your favorite cryptid and why is it Mothman?

There is a blank page waiting for S.P.I.R.I.T. Issue 4, and Melissa is about to fill it. That is my favorite part of this whole job. Knowing something incredible is coming and getting to watch it arrive. What comic panel still lives in your head?

Last month we passed a milestone without my realizing: I have now done over ONE THOUSAND STRIPS since I took over FLASH GORDON in 2023. I cannot thank you all enough for reading, discussing, and sharing the comic these past few years. Truly the best gig I've ever had. Much, much more to come ⚡

Unused promo art of the cast of my run on the FLASH GORDON daily strip. Clockwise from top left: Adrane, Flash Gordon, Doctor Hans Zarkov, Bok, Empress Aura, Dale Arden, and Queen Fria. We also see Sky City and a couple Frigian airships.

Here's a look at my current, default Illustrator lettering template. Whenever I start a new project, I decide which style of these assets will look best with the art, (e.g., which style of radio balloons, which shout balloons, etc.) and delete the rest before saving as the template for that project.

A backer messaged to say they bought S.P.I.R.I.T. for their niece and she has not put it down. This is the part nobody warns you about. You make a comic to tell a story, and then it becomes someone's favorite thing. Thank you for that.

Sketch to inks to color to final. This is one S.P.I.R.I.T. page coming together in Melissa Capriglione's hands. When people ask whether indie comics can really look this good, this is our answer.

Lauren Sparks @wingedelfgirl.bsky.social · 12/04/2026

After reading @notsosuper.pub's script, the first thing I did was character designs - here are a few from early 2023! I also pretty quickly started exploring how to simplify forested backgrounds, though we eventually switched from conventional forest to fungus forest. 😄

Character and costume concepts from early 2023 by Lauren Sparks drawn in grayscale ink and marker, of the character princess Darby, for the kids fantasy graphic novel "Otis and the Sylva Beast" written by Jacques Nyemb.

Princess Darby has dark skin and long curly dark hair. On the left is an idea for Darby's regular clothing as a princess, with sandals, a long skirt and short tunic decorated with a leaf motif, a belt with fancy buckle, bracelets, necklace and beaded headdress inspired by some Indian hair decorations, with her curly hair pulled back and a big flower also in her hair for decoration. her expression is cheerful and content.

On the right is an idea for Darby's clothing after fleeing her home and hiding in the forest for some weeks. She wears knee-high boots and pants with ripped-up knees, and the same short tunic with leaf motifs (though it's gotten ripped as well), covered by torso armor. She wears the same belt with fancy buckle, but there's a knife held in it at the front, and a sword in its scabbard hanging on her back from a diagonal shoulder strap. Her expression is much more fierce, and her hair is pulled back in a single braid with no ornaments.

Character and costume concepts from early 2023 by Lauren Sparks drawn in grayscale ink and marker, of the character Otis, for the kids fantasy graphic novel "Otis and the Sylva Beast" written by Jacques Nyemb.

There are 3 drawings of Otis, who has medium-dark skin, very short dark hair and large round glasses in all of these concepts. On the left is Otis with his whole getup: simple sandals, black pants, and a black long-sleeve shirt under a black poncho with a hood. The poncho has a light border around the edge of the hood and a simple black and white triangle design on the chest and shoulders. He wears a large backpack with a rolled-up sleeping back tied on the top of it.

In the center is Otis with the same outfit minus the backpack and with one arm out, showing the poncho more clearly.

On the right is Otis with the poncho off, held bundled over his left arm, to show the black button-down shirt he wears under it.

Character and costume concept from early 2023 by Lauren Sparks drawn in grayscale ink and marker and a little yell/orange colored pencil, of the character princess Darby, for the kids fantasy graphic novel "Otis and the Sylva Beast" written by Jacques Nyemb.

Darby wears a variation of her "hiding in the woods" costume from the other concept attached to this post, with boots, pants, tunic, torso and arm armor. She has a confident expression on her face and is posed dramatically lunging forward, with her sword held up in her right hand. Her sword is on fire with some yellow and orange colored pencil - the flaming capability is the secret cool thing about her custom sword.

Character, costume and environment concept from early 2023 by Lauren Sparks drawn in black ink and grayscale watercolor, of the character Otis, for the kids fantasy graphic novel "Otis and the Sylva Beast" written by Jacques Nyemb.

Otis stands on the near bank of a stream in bright sunshine, holding up his right hand to shade from the sun. The expression on his face is uncertain - he is totally lost. He wears a very similar costume to the other concept attached to this post: sandals, black pants, black long-sleeve shirt, black poncho with simple white triangle design around the shoulders/top of chest, large round glasses. He carries his big backpack with large sleeping bag tied on top. He has longer hair now, buzzed on the sides but longer on top.

The background with a stony stream and many plants and trees going back into the distance, is very loosely based on the style of Jeff Smith's forest backgrounds from the graphic novel Bone.

Every issue of S.P.I.R.I.T. is built on one idea. Queer kids get to be the hero. Not the sidekick, not the tragedy, the hero. Melissa Capriglione draws them like they know it too. Who was the first character that made you feel seen?
