Ever since I finished my PhD way back in1979 I’ve had a book on the go, but now as I’m just finishing off a little Element on early modern women and almanacs I find myself looking into a book abyss and can’t think of any future big project. Maybe I need to crowd source an idea…

I remember one reviewer of my 1621 book puzzled over why I had chosen a year in which I couldn’t write about Shakespeare. I did say clearly in the intro I chose 621 because it is th year of Urania. Also I published my year book long before Shapiro ‘s Shakespearemaxxing year book.

I’ve just done this with All’s Well quoting direct from folio because most standard editions emend quite radically the passage I discuss

Paul salzman @pjsalzman.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Where possible I quote from the original and cite the edition though not always possible with manuscripts.

I would not do this in a scholarly journal. In fact like you I’m very surprised. I would for something aimed at general readers and these days I am more enthusiastic about modernised editions to ensure that eg women writers don’t seem quaint and harder to read than Shakespeare

#earlymodern always a treat to write about Frances Wolfreston’s almanacs in the context of blanks, standing on the shoulders of Morgan, Newcomb, and Lindenbaum. Such a privilege having been able to work with them and the myriad other almanacs at the Bodleian.

#earlymodern so sad to hear of the death of Betty Hageman a pioneer scholar of early modern women’s writing and a generous soul; I was so grateful for her kindness when I had a short term fellowship at the Folger — the folger should name a chair in the readingroom in her honour.
