The first review of Remembering England: Cultural Memory in the Sagas of Icelanders has appeared! In Dr Kennedy's positive (yet critical) assessment, it is 'almost unfailingly interesting and insightful' and 'scholars of the Íslendingasögur, and especially the skáldsögur, will 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 this book'. Henry VIII loved to receive cryptic gifts, but the so-called horned helmet given by the Emperor Maximilian I is perhaps the most bizarre! In @parergon.bsky.social 42.1, Grace Waye-Harris analyses its long-disputed iconographical significance. muse.jhu.edu/pub/62/...
The horned helmet of Henry VIII, part of a full suit of armour made by Konrad Seusenhofer between 1511 and 1514. The armour was a gift from the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. The helmet includes a face piece with protruding eyes, a toothy grimace and a stubbly chin with ram's horns rivetted to its upper part.

Radziwill Letopis, fol. 14v Miniature: Oleg of Novgorod's campaign against Constantinople (s. Rus'–Byzantine War 907).

In the miniature, Oleg leads a flotilla of Rus' warriors, shown arriving at the fortified walls of Constantinople, known then as Tsargrad. The scene is highly stylized, with iconic domed towers and crenellated walls symbolizing the grandeur and defenses of the Byzantine capital. The Rus’ soldiers are depicted in uniform armor and helmets, often in motion, emphasizing the military strength and organization of Oleg’s force.

A notable element in many visual representations of this campaign—including this one—is the legendary tactic attributed to Oleg: dragging his ships across land to attack the city from an unexpected direction, though this is not always explicitly shown. The image may also include symbolic gestures of negotiation or surrender, referencing the favorable trade treaty Oleg secured with Byzantium as a result of this campaign.
