Papa LOVES his corn at Swanny Ponds

Back at the Ponds today and exciting news, we have cygnets!! Fairly sure they've been around a few days by now, so fluffy! ^•^ #birds #swans

A pair of adult mute swans in a man-made lake, swimming towards the camera from a distance.

Though they're not easy to spot, the two are accompanied by 7 cygnets!

6 mute swan cygnets linger close to the camera, their parents watching dutifully in the background.

One sibling must be a daddy's bird, since they decided they'd rather hang out with him than eat with their siblings.

I was feeding them with oats this time, I like to mix it up where I can :)

Both parent mute swans keep close to their babies, watching closely as the young cygnets are very close to the humans.

I need to establish that this was on a ramp, and the parents were comfortable with the cygnets literally being close enough I could've reached out and grabbed one!
(Obviously never do that though the parents will kill you and/or never trust you again)

SO MANY PIGEONS at Swanny Ponds

Some time at the Ponds today, we have nesting swans, a lovely blue heron (I think) and plenty of pigeons! All but the heron appreciated peas and seeds! Heron is too shy, and would probably prefer fish :) #birds #swans #pond #heron #pigeons

Male mute swan swimming away just after he filled up on some lovely peas! Some mallard ducks are around as well ^^

Very sunny today!

A small group of pigeons feasting on seeds and a few peas, while keeping half an eye on the nearby human (my sister)

Female mute swan sitting content on her nest. She's been doing this for around 7 years according to someone who's been coming here longer than me, so she knows what she's doing!

Hopefully we'll see some wee cygnets soon :)

A blue heron(?) sitting on some rocks which were placed in the pond, seemingly content.

This one was further off at first, not sure when the flight happened to bring it over but a nice photo op regardless!

Back at the Ponds the other day, seems the swans have started nesting now! 🪶 Looking forward to seeing new cygnets soon enough :) #birds #swans #ponds

A pair of adult mute swans on an island (which is in the centre of the pond I visit in my local park). One is sitting on their nest while the other naps next to her.

Duck loaves!

A pair of mallards, male and female, are sitting by the side of the pond with their feet tucked under themselves, forming some lovely loaves :)

Haven't been to the park as much lately (it's cold!) but stopped by again a few days ago to provide some snacks, I think the swans appreciated it. Both parents also had some but I didn't take many pictures this time lol #birds #swans #ducks #pond 🪶

A young mute swan stretches it's neck into the water for a drink while dad preens nearby. Both stand on a small island in the middle of a pond.

In the foreground, a couple of ducks swim by, both mallards, one male and one female.

Two young mute swans eating some grass in the water.

Soooo the #pigeons in the town centre are far more confident than the ones in the park, I found out The guy biting my finger as I point at him was scared off the bench then HOPPED BACK UP AGAIN! But honestly, how very DARE I run out of food, it was completely justified 🤷‍♀️ #birds

Many, many pigeons gathering around my sister and I, this is what happened when they noticed our freshly bought lunch from Greggs

One pigeon peeks out from behind me, I think he was trying to assassinate me for my sausage roll!

They're nibbling my thumb, all I did was try to show them there was no food left :(

This guy hopped off the bench when I moved (he had been threatening my hand by spinning and puffing out his chest!)
He hopped back up right after though and decided that I deserved to have my finger eaten for pointing at him, which in fairness, was rude of me

Here's #SwanSpeak translated. "It's getting cold. Tell everyone the wild birds need feeding". In winter it can be life saving to give grains, seeds, greens, oats, peas, sweetcorn or swan granules for your local #waterbirds. Fresh seeded bread is OK in winter when little natural food is about #birds

This cygnet apparently likes lettuce, says he wants a bit more please! #swans #birds #pond #ducks

A mute swan cygnet looks directly at the camera, having stepped out of the pond some time ago. Most of its feathers are white at this point, with only a small amount of baby feathers left.

I'd prefer to discourage them from coming this close; it's not safe with some people, but I'm not sure how to...

The same cygnet now leans forward, it's beak slightly open, right towards the camera once again.

It was actually peeping at me, asking me to hurry up with breaking the lettuce already I suppose!

I’m not going to tell you how to behave on here. Just don’t displease the Judgmental Pigeon.

It’s grey, of course, with attractive green and purple iridescence around the neck and so forth. The light, the set of its head, and the look in its eye combine to give it a judgmental look. Specifically, it is judging YOU.

And the forth and final post! Last but not least, I present... P I G E O N S It was practically the whole flock that showed up, these images barely do it justice XD #birds #pigeons #swans #park

Many pigeons scattered around, they noticed I was providing corn and apparently wanted in on that.

Mute swans remain in the background still in the pond, with the male keeping a dutiful eye on the situation while his cygnet eats.

More pigeons have now gathered, now provided with seeds which are much more plentiful than the corn from before, and is out of reach of the swans, who are still eating in the background alongside some mallard ducks.

The pigeons are now shown at a closer angle, now eating from my hand which is held flat on the ground.

My favourite part of this image is the one pigeon with their beak wide open in the background, I also look like that when hungry 😌

Another closeup image of pigeons feeding from my hand, similar to the last, but this time with an eager one right up front.
"Hello!"

Post number two! Apparently, papa swan was feeling brave today 😌 (Either that, or corn is just REALLY good lol) Any smart bird people able to tell me what his wings being arched means here? I don't think he felt threatened at all, and that's all Google wants to tell me 🤷‍♀️ #swan #birds #pond

A male mute swan looks directly into the camera, fairly close to the edge of the pond

A male mute swan has slightly arched wings as his cygnet swims nearby.

He's either keeping an eye on me (the cameraperson) or said cygnet. I have no way of telling.

The mother mute swan peacefully swimming

Male mute swan is now reaching for corn, I can't honestly tell if he was just deciding to close his eye here or if there was an injury... Anyone able to tell better than I can?

A few posts today! First up, the swans really enjoyed the sweetcorn I had on offer today! :) #birds #swans #pond #cygnets

Four cygnets. Two are eating from a pile of corn, one is lowering their head towards the pond they're swimming in, and one is swimming by in the background.

Two cygnets and one grown mute swan. One cygnet is stretching their neck to reach some corn, while the other is swimming with their dad.

A cygnet reaching straight towards the camera and past some corn available right in front of it.

(Impatient baby wanted MORE corn, it's better when it comes fresh from the hand apparently!)

Three swans swim in the foreground, two cygnets and their mum, while a black headed gull also swims around in the background.

Similar to the previous photo but this time it's a front angle and he's missing his hat!
He also has a D20 next to him now.

Back with the swans today, everyone was fairly enthusiastic for lettuce again :) The cygnets are getting so big! #birds #swans #ducks #pigeons

A cygnet looking directly into the camera, along with one of its siblings approaching in the background, side on. Both of them have grown in most of their adult feathers.

Both parents watch dutifully further in the background, and three more cygnets are approaching.

One cygnet is in the forefront, taking lettuce from the camera person. Another is approaching while two more are minding their own business in the background.

A group of cygnets, now all peacefully swimming and preening, along with some gulls, ducks and coots swimming in the background.

A grey cliff pigeon watches on as a male mute swan eats, with a larger group of different birds in the background eating as well.

Someone had left pumpkin innards on the ramp here, they seemed popular.

Some more pictures of the birds for today :) Befriended this family a while back and it's been lovely to watch them grow over time, we've been able to watch two sets of cygnets grow up with this pair :D #birds #swans #park #pond #ducks #pigeons (Is this how hashtags work I don't post stuff XD)

Most of the swan family here; both parents and four out of the five cygnets

Both adult swans swimming together, the female is preening her neck

A mother duck with one duckling, on the ramp which leads out of the pond. I managed to catch the duckling mid-shake in this photo lol

What we theorise is a domesticated duck for some reason, along with a young male mallard and a bunch of pigeons.
