I was hoping to live skeet @nodeconf.eu, but the talks are too interesting and intense so I have to pay attention. But you can follow along at live.nodeconf.eu and get a much better feel for the talks. (You still miss out on the hallway track, but at least you get interesting talks!)

Open source maintainers are starting to get all manner of communiques from the compliance & legal departments of huge corporations using vaguely threatening and legal-sounding language and demanding the maintainer fill out forms and reports and attest to the security of their project "because CRA".

Yes it’s all about auditable application bundles and their provenance. The goal is to ship the entire app tree with exactly the packages you want and have audited. Combined with a #! before the zip you get “self-executing“ CLI apps that just require node to be installed.

Philipp Dunkel @pipobscure.com · 22/09/2026
I’m not entirely sure about your use-case, but I’m intrigued. Let’s chat some time. If I can make it work for your goals, I will.

Have a look at the sigstore project. It’s pretty cool for codesigning via github/google/ms OICD

Philipp Dunkel @pipobscure.com · 22/09/2026
I’m using sigstore for signing, which issues short lived signing certificate and puts it onto a public register to verify validity at the time. Alternatively you can provide your own chain in the zip and use any regular node mechanisms you can specify through NODE_OPTIONS

And with a bit of zip-magic before signing, you can have your application running by just going `./my-app.zip` which makes it perfect for CLI tooling written in node.

Now that @nodejs.org v26.10.0 is out, I have released something that lets you bundle your entire app, digitally sign it with a certificate or sigstore and run it directly from node without unpacking. Have a look at github.com/pipobscure/b...

Have package managers ship as signed zip archives that can be fetched in a single go with all their dependencies and the executed via --vfs-load you mean 😉

It probably is, from a technical perspective. However anthropomorphising triggers instincts in us in terms of how we think about what’s happening. And I have a feeling those instincts let is maintain boundaries more easily than otherwise. Same mechanism as when people do it for cars/boats/etc.

@naugtur.pl I‘m looking forward to having that discussion over a drink in Bologna @nodeconf.eu

Philipp Dunkel @pipobscure.com · 17/09/2026
And ultimately that means I can have no auditable trail, no separation, and no idea what data the thing has access to. So maybe we should anthropomorphise more?

Taking that approach makes AI actions auditable and maintains clear boundaries. If I treated my AI as “just a completion engine” then the natural approach would be to embed it into MY environment, my “Outlook”, my “OneDrive” (to stay inside MS lingo).
