I’d like to propose an autumn filled with plummy crushed velvet which feels entirely appropriate as summer has given way to chill September mornings here in the South West of England. It would feel like hoiking around your own cosy sofa. Late #1880s #museumatFIT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Hedgehogs drink from puddles and ponds but it hasn’t rained for a while. So leaving out shallow bowls of water is a lifesaver - especially for hoglets like Titch. 🦔

Hedgehogs are largely nocturnal but also crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk). The smallest hoglet we’ve seen follows a crepuscular pattern. Often first to arrive around dusk and last to leave around dawn. Maximises chances of getting food. Anyway, here’s Titch a few minutes ago. 🦔

Firefly (Hotaru), a prominent 1913 Nihonga painting of a woman by the renowned Japanese female artist Uemura Shōen.
Pausing in the midst of suspending a translucent olive-green mosquito net (kaya), a young woman twists her body with fluid, serpentine grace. Her raised arms, bared to the elbow, work to secure a green cord against the net’s vermilion brocade border—adorned with a delicate asano-ha (hemp-leaf) pattern. She wears a cool indigo-blue summer kimono decorated with blooming lilies and lattice lines, held loosely by a soft, pale pink obi. Beneath the pooling hem of her garment, a solitary, bare white foot emerges against the neutral silk ground. Bending her head back in gentle curiosity, her gaze is drawn down toward the lower left, where a single, delicate firefly (hotaru) hovers in the warm twilight air, emitting a faint, golden point of light.

Painted in 1913 (Taishō 2), Firefly (Hotaru) is a landmark masterpiece of Nihonga by Uemura Shōen (1875–1949), the pioneering artist who elevated bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) to unprecendented heights of moral dignity and psychological depth
Aesthetically, the painting hinges on the delicate interplay between physical boundary and open atmosphere. The sheer, cascading netting functions as a spatial kekkai (protective threshold), establishing a domestic sanctuary while employing miegakure (the design principle of hide-and-reveal) to filter the space through translucent folds. The unadorned silk surrounding her forms an expansive field of yohaku (meaningful negative space), allowing the viewer to sense the warm, humid air of a late summer evening without structural clutter. Her poised contour and unforced posture embody an innate, unpretentious iki (chic refinement).

The photograph is part of Jodi Cobb's iconic National Geographic coverage on the hidden world of Japan's geisha.
Resting upon a colorful polka-dot towel, two young apprentices share an intimate, off-stage moment in their private dressing quarters, their heads leaning together over an open magazine. Their faces are freshly transformed by stark white oshiroi foundation, framed by sharp crimson accents at the eyelids and lips, while their hair is tightly bound in purple and ivory cloth wraps (katsura-shitaji) in preparation for their formal coiffures. The maiden above, clad in a red-and-black striped cotton yukata, drapes a supportive arm over her companion, who rests her cheek against her hand while leafing through the glossy pages. Casual interior details—a white paper shopping bag in the foreground, a vanity case, and the faint outline of a telephone in the shadowed background—anchor this tender interaction within the unadorned reality of daily life.

Captured by photojournalist Jodi Cobb during her landmark project for National Geographic—later published in her seminal 1995 monograph Geisha: The Hidden World—this photograph offered global audiences unprecedented access to the strictly guarded privacy of Japan’s karyūkai ("flower and willow world"). Cobb was the first photographer granted extended permission to document the secluded interior quarters of Kyoto's okiya (geisha lodging houses). This singular image pierces the enigmatic facade of the geisha myth, catching young apprentices (maiko) in a candid, unscripted moment between rigorous daily training in classical arts and their evening banquets.

Frederic Leighton depicts well-dressed young woman with her arms resting on top of small “cottage” piano that’s being played languidly by a dashing-looking long-haired man, presumably her beau. The artist felt that this was the most successful of all his paintings (Golden Hours, 1864)

Our Wartime Weekend's not happening this weekend. 💔💔 Sorry everyone.
Hi everyone,

We’re sorry to have to do this, but unfortunately due to recent unforeseen events we’re having to cancel our upcoming Wartime Weekend. This was due to take place this weekend. We understand that many of you will be disappointed, we are too, and we hope you will continue to support our future events. We are intending to run the Wartime Weekend at a later date and we hope you will be able to join us for this.

If you would like to visit us, The Devil’s Porridge Museum will be open as usual this weekend but please be aware that we will have no additional events taking place. This was not an easy decision for us to make, but we hope that you can understand that we didn’t want to run an event which we felt would fall below the standard we advertised and you would expect from us, due to unforeseen events which have arisen since then.

Sorry everyone and all the best,

The Devil’s Porridge Museum Team.
