More details on the firing of the National Science Board. The NSF now has no director, deputy director, or board. They have issued almost no new awards in 2026. The plan appears to be to completely destroyed the agency. The details are horrifying and have Russ Vought written all over them.

I visited the #HenryDoorlyZoo in Omaha last week and saw some Cow Nose Rays in one of the aquariums, so I thought I would post an old drawing I did of them 🐡
An illustration of five Cow Nose Rays swimming along a sandy sea bottom. The illustration is drawn from a bird's eye view, with the rays swimming to the right. Turquoise water shimmers and sunlight reflects yellow-green along the sandy bottom. The rays are a warm brown and are roughly diamond shaped, slightly distorted by the water.

This is one of the wildest deep-sea mining stories to me. Paleodictyon is a 500-million-year-old trace fossil from an unknown organism. In the last 50 years, we've found their honeycomb traces on the seafloor. There is a living organism that has been doing its thing for half a billion years.

🧬 New study teases apart how parasites “tap into” host metabolism using nitrogen isotope profiling. A cestode parasite shows just ~0.5 ‰ trophic shift from its host’s liver—revealing surprisingly direct nutrient assimilation. #Ecology #Parasites #Isotopes www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Experimental design for the well replicated parasite-host feeding study. 4 time periods, 3 tissues, host and parasite makes bulk sampling difficult and amino acid sampling excessively expensive and labor intensive! Great work by first author!

Have you ordered your Christmas eels yet? Have you?? Medieval kings often served eels at their Xmas feasts. In 1213, King John had 10,000 eels at his holiday party. His son, Henry, once ordered up 40,000! So get on it! You don't want your party to be the First Nö-eel, do you? 🗃️🧪
Meme. Painting of the wise men coming to see the baby Jesus. Mary, in a blue cloak, is holding the baby while Joseph stands behind her in brown clothes. Mary looks adoring, and Joe looks old. His hair is gray, and he's balding, & he looks like a man who'd need to worry about his young wife stepping out. There are a couple of women in the background who look like they're gossiping.

The cow is looking on in the background, peering out of a cave and lowering over an empty manger with the sense of an animal that would like it's trough back, please.

The whole right side of the scene is take up by the wise men and their massive entourage. One of the magi is bending to receive Jesus' infant blessing (which may smell like spit up). The others await their turn They're all super-wealthy; even their horse is gold-bedecked. But are they going to set the Holy Family up for life? Nope. They're gonna leave some party favors and jet. Kings, man.

Meme text reads:
