Thanks to emails from @paleosoc.bsky.social and @geosociety.bsky.social I've finally submitted my comment on the OMB changes that will devastate scientific funding if approved.

Congratulations to @chadtopaz.bsky.social on his incredible new book "Unlocking Justice"! I'm only one chapter in but have already learned a ton and his writing style is snappy, insightful, and informative. We had serviceable rural Thai food to celebrate. press.princeton.edu/books/hardco...

OK so I've been pretty quiet on here for quite some time. I'm still trying to figure out how best to use this place in a way that is generative, sustainable, and (at least sometimes) fun. Here's a sea lion I met last week at Carmel River Beach on a family trip to CA.

I finally found a reason to make one of these damned things. Thanks RFK you absolute goon!!!

One of my favorite things about this project, and so much of my work, is the vast array of scales in which the work takes place - from outcrops to electron microscopes. Here's a scanning electron microscope image of one of these apatite scale microfossils, showing bonkers sub-micron scale detail.

These rocks are from a place called Mount Slipper, right on the AK/Yukon border, on the land of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in people. Here's my other amazing colleague Justin Strauss looking out over the (snowy) ca. 800 million year old rocks where we collected these fossils.

I spent hoursssss trying to get this fossil and a handful of others on to these grids - and then I put them in my carry on luggage and flew them to Oxford U where Nick was at the time to examine them with their high res TEM microscope. Here's me in 2014 collecting the rocks that fossil is found in.

This is one of my favorite images, taken by my amazing colleague Nick Tosca. It's a single microfossil that I picked with a micromanipulator and placed on a transmission electron microscopy grid. We did this to examine the crystallographic structure of the apatite minerals that make up the fossil

Determined not to JUST post photos of my frolic noodle Onyx so I will also start posting a grab bag of science images with some brief context. I have been so fortunate to get to go to amazing places and to examine some incredible tiny fossils and its time to SHARE. But for now, Onyx and quartz:

We went to this area on an NSF-funded project to investigate early Neoproterozoic (~900 million year old) reefs and their surrounding environments. Here I'm standing on what I "affectionally" referred to as the Talus Palace, with the tops of the reef structures in the background.

This summer I did field work in NWT, on the land the Satú people. It was intense, challenging, & amazing. Here are some photos taken by the incredible Robert Gill, who accompanied us on the trip, and kept scrambling up impossibly steep talus slopes even after his drone sliced up his finger. #geology

Next question for my SLAC / undergrad institution friends: do you get compensated ($$ or otherwise) for mentoring research students (esp when you're not getting paid summer salary from a grant)? If so, how? ⚒️ (Cambrian stromatolites for your viewing pleasure)
