the graphic-novel surge in bookshops that has been developing over the past decade and in particular since the pandemic. In 2025, adult and kids' comics categories through NielsenIQ BookScan's Total Consumer Market combined to deliver £77.2m for UK booksellers, by far a record year. This will be absolutely obliterated by 2026's end as sales are up a massive 25% for the sector year on year; with a little following wind - heck, maybe just a light breeze - graphic novels could eclipse £100m in a calendar year for the first time in The report goes on to say that "comics, manga and graphic novels are no longer a niche interest within public libraries. They are increasingly considered a core part of a modern library collection, helping libraries reach audiences who may not be drawn to more traditional

As former Uni admin who regularly handled PhD submissions I have some thoughts on this, firstly Turnitin handled the PhD Thesis poorly. This isn't unique to them, very few tools are built to account for the PhD workflow, but always a pain to split the Thesis in enough pieces so it could be uploaded

The UK will experience a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August. The extent of the Sun's coverage and the timing of maximum obscuration will differ across the country. Never look directly at the sun; use a pinhole projector or certified eclipse glasses to view it.

Great to see As You Like It last night by Illyria Theatre at Insole Court. It has been an absolute age since I last saw a production (and many more since I had the smallest role in one). All the cast were electric but special mention to Julian Brett, whose joyous performance stole the show!

Attending the Lord Mayor's Garden Party in the Castle a few Sunday's ago and hearing about the great work City Hospice is doing from their Chief Executive, Dr Liz Booyse, was an absolute pleasure. Over £5,000 was raised, clearly a result of everyone pitching in and I can't wait for the next event!

I was at Mark's Thank You fundraiser last night, a good evening with good company. Many people in attendance had been positively affected by Mark over the years and, as Mark made clear, he intends for this not to be the end of his political involvement but another step on the continuing road.

A very Llandaf Festival morning with the inimitable historian and archivist Morgan Haigh before a tour of the tower with the knowledgeable bell ringers. The outstanding view of Cardiff was just the final cherry on top of two wonderful (and educational) tours.

Lisa Nandy is right, X 'favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate.' At the last Full Council meeting I continued to put pressure on the Council, I do not believe we should remain on it.

Our infrastructure is not prepared for the climate emergency. The Climate Change Committee's report 'A Well-Adapted UK' makes that clear and at Thursday I wanted to know what we are doing to get ready, because the next heatwave will certainly not wait for us. www.theccc.org.uk/publication/...

Last Tuesday we had GLL, who run a lot of the Cardiff Leisure Centres, in front of us. The work of scrutiny often isn't snappy soundbites but detailed work over a long period to establish that the best possible deal is being done for our residents.

On Saturday I both held my regular Councillor Surgery and, beforehand, I did a walkaround with fellow Labour member David, knocking on doors and picking up issues directly from residents. Blocked drains reported, potholes flagged to be filled, sloped pathways raised. A very productive two sessions.

On a bit of a Murderbot and Star Wars kick at the moment so reading Razor's Edge (set between ANH and ESB) by Martha Wells and what comes up. The @morecivilized.bsky.social referenced grappling hook comes up but considered by Han.

He could hook it onto something and play out the fibercord to give himself a safety line, though. I've visited residents who have a problem with an old overgrown oak tree (second oldest in Cardiff) overhanging their houses. The tree is protected by a TPO but these don't require the landowner to maintain, or pay for any work needed, so my residents have to pay or risk waking up to a tree branch.
