7 years ago today, CRIPPLED was published. This morning, a lecturer emailed me to say a student had written their dissertation inspired by it. I’m continually blown away by the impact this book has had and so grateful for how readers have responded - and are still discovering it.
A bookcase filled with copies of Crippled. The front cover - dark blue with white writing - is visible.

Sometimes the books we choose end up being too topical. Our thoughts are with the ordinary Cuban citizens, facing extraordinary strain right now. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Text reads: The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, is the son of Cubans who emigrated from the island to Miami before the Cuban revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power in 1959 and a fierce opponent of the regime he founded.

Cuba had already rationed gasoline and imposed limited daily electricity blackouts as it struggled with limited oil supplies. The island only has 15 to 20 days’ worth of oil in inventory, according to a report from the Financial Times.

Gutted that Shelflife is going, the first two images are from their Instagram account announcement. This year they've been the place we've gotten all the bookclub books from. I've just picked up what's likely to be our last order (for a while at least) and that sucks.
Text reads:

shelflifecdf
 💫🪱 A FAREWELL TO WORMS 🪱💫

Well guys, it's the post I never wanted to write. Shelf Life will be closing its doors at the Corp at the end of February (last official day tbc). Fear not though, we're not disappearing completely, we'll still exist online for now, some pop-ups and markets, and of course the book club will keep running strong! And who knows, maybe when I'm feeling a lil' stronger Shelf Life 4.0 will rise from the ashes. But y'know, that's for later...

So yeah, it's not been an easy decision to make but with changes at the Corp, a big ol' drop off in footfall through last year and just general squeezy vibes all round (understatement), it seems like the right time to call it, while we're more or less ahead! Last year was financially and emotionally very difficult so it's time to hibernate and take some time to get my heart/soul/bank account back on track ❤️‍🩹Text reads:

Running the shop for the last five years in all three of its locations has been an absolute trip - I love the choosing and the recommending, chatting, reading - but mostly I love all the friends (omg get a room) I've made through the shop and the book club. It's also been a super steep learning curve, I started with a credit card and a £300 book order and have built it by keeping things as organic as possible which has been important to me (DIY or die 4eva), suck it Big Business!

It's been an absolute treat to be able to live my childhood dream of working around books, and I hope it's brought something useful and meaningful to the community. The word community gets bandied about a little too loosely but I really do mean it when I say the sense of community I feel through this shop fills my little heart with SO MUCH good, I'll miss that a lot. It wouldn't have existed without *you* so maybe this will be the biggest thanks I'll send out - to everyone who's supported us over the last five years, customers, suppliers, followers, in person, from afar, post sharing and aaallll the ways, it's been absolutely fucking incredible. 💗

Anyway, that's my word limit so.. we're open Thu-Sun: 12-4 through the rest of Jan and will update for Feb v soon, big big love and see ya soon 💫💛🫡

The year roadmap, its design, started at the idea of the first 4 years of the bookclub remade as 3d models. At the time it was too complex a process and the idea of overall minimalism resulted in some OK and dreadful designs from the originals. It did, however, form the kernel of a good idea...
