Love it when a business emails me asking how they can steal one of our culturally sensitive Indigenous works and I scroll down and see some kind of generic Acknowledgement Of Country below their email signature.

If you’re freelance, self-employed or contracting, do not enter terms such as “self-employed”, “contractor” or “business owner”. Enter the description of your actual occupation. The information you provide will help the ABS to code your work in the creative sector accurately.

Occupation: Be as specific and desciptive as possible: library curator, gallery installer, museum educator, gallery public programmer, archivist. Main duties: include a brief description of the work you do, use keywords such as visual arts, literature, music, dance, theatre etc.

This matters! The Census helps show the size, diversity and location of Australia’s creative workforce. Reliable Census data gives governments,  industry and researchers a clearer picture of the workforce, helping to inform future planning, skills development and infrastructure.

Information forwarded from Public Galleries Association Victoria: Recent updates to Australia’s occupation classifications mean more creative jobs are now better reflected in Census data. Now it’s time to make those improvements count.

This charmingly antiquated forum is officially the number one conjuring magician forum in the world. It won first place last year at the The International Federation of Magic Societies awards. It hasn't changed much since 2001 because it doesn't need to.
A screenshot of the homepage of The Magic Cafe internet forum. Multiple colured fluroescent titles over a flat black background. The text only covers 50 percent of the screen. The style is reminiscent of Internet 1.0 style dating back to the year 2001.

If you work back of house in a library, have a think about your relationship to the reference librarians and library officers in your workplace. If you wouldn't bend over backwards to do whatever you possibly could to help them, I'd argue you're in the wrong line of work.

Two more of Jock Sturges' photography books have been refused classification in Australia, making them illegal to sell or distribute here. My little library has quietly suppressed their catalogue records. The Australian media has not reported on it.

A colleague shared their favourite artwork in our little library with me today and I just adore it: Onions [art original] by Caroline Peebles, [ca. 1870-ca. 1910], H2010.77/18. We don't know much about Peebles' life but she passed away in 1911, making all her watercolours out of copyright.
