Snippet from the linked fanfiction that reads: Being in Verxina's room wasn’t anything new to Shion. The two of them had been going steady for a few months by this point, and overnight visits to her home had become semi-frequent due to its proximity to Tracen. But in the light of the full moon, it felt like she was seeing it all for the first time again.

Just as she shifted her weight off the mattress to get up and close the window, something rustled behind her.

Shion shouldn't have turned around.

In symmetry to her room, Verxina had only been seen by her girlfriend during the warmth of the day or under the artificial brightness of street lamps. Shion already thought she was beautiful under those.

Tonight, under the silvery light that she'd hate if she was awake, Verxina was nothing short of a goddess.

i think i am going to try and go into evercold with zero expectations. dawntrail is solidly my second favourite expansion in the game and will always be special to me as the source of arcadion brainrot and my introduction to raiding, so its weird to go into an expac with a diff set of priorities

It was an umamusume with hair on the boundary between blonde and electric blue that spilled over a shroud that shimmered in the midday light. She regarded Nature with an unfocused stare while chewing on a massive carrot, and for a moment Nature thought the girl was looking at a speck of dust in the air instead of at her.

But Nature knew this umamusume. Ikuno had thought about trying to recruit her into Canopus because she'd been rejected by most other people at Tracen, but she'd been picked up by a new trainer before they could extend the invitation.

“Are you Neo Universe?” Nature said weakly.

Universe's pupils danced with light. “So you are… from ‘there.’”

Nature slapped a hand over mouth.

With no reason to object, they followed Palmer up an overgrown incline covered by lousy weeds and chipped bulbs of obsidian. The rodents and birds that had scuttled through the lower road had disappeared, as had the mayflies that had been licking at Nature’s brow in the morning, leaving behind a vacuum of sound split only by their footsteps. How was an ordinary ruin creating this unearthly silence?

The answer revealed itself as Nature crested the hill.

What should’ve been several rounds of fences forming the racecourse was instead a single snapped circle. The audience stands were far more collapsed than they had appeared at a distance, and covered with scabby soot to boot.

The constant crinkling of flames bored into her ear, and ignoring Palmer and Marvey’s trepidation, she and McQueen pulled forward towards the lip of the hole. They were confronted by a chasm filled with rising fire and smoke that prickled Nature’s skin, with the missing fenceposts embedded in its surface like rotted teeth.

For the second time that day, Nice Nature woke up in a place she didn’t recognize.

She was laid out on cold stone in a long and narrow hall, one that had been a chapel before its pews had been sawed into stubs. Two massive panes of stained glass filtered colored afternoon light into the top half of the room, while a third stood as a shattered corpse between them, jaws covered by a massive waxed sheet. For the bottom half of the building, where Nice Nature lay, there was only torchlight.

The chapel had been repurposed into a makeshift hospital. Nature could see a basket of bloodstained bandages in the periphery of her vision, and could taste decay in the air, tepid and bloody, masked inadequately by alcohol and cloth. Other patients groaned and shifted around her, but in her reclined position, she could only see one umamusume whose entire upper body was covered in burns.

Sitting next to Nature on the floor was Mejiro Palmer. She had one knee up and was chewing on mastic gum while her eyes bored a hole in the rotted ceiling, and there was a dark handsomeness to the ash stuck in her face’s tight lines, as if an artist had lost their pastels and been forced to draw with only charcoal.
