Grateful for my colleagues Rep. Marcia Morey, Rep. Julie von Haefen, and Rep. Renee Price, and everyone joining in this work. Please try and come to the Love Forward events February 11-14. I have no doubt you'll be as inspired as I've been!

Proud and humbled to join Bishop Barber and Repairers of the Breach at the legislature to talk and listen about the future we deserve and how to Love Forward to get there. Bishop Barber reminded us that we have to bring the positive vision for the future, share it, and invite people to join us.

Our Constitution has an answer for a lawless president: Congress. But it is clear that Republicans in Congress will never even consider holding this administration accountable for its lawlessness. They've broken their oaths. Our Constitution has an answer for a cowardly Congress, too: the voters.

Federal agents cannot be allowed to obstruct state investigators as they pursue any and all appropriate criminal charges. No one is above the law. [2/3]

Renee Nicole Good—a poet and mother—was murdered in broad daylight by federal agents. We have the video. Our eyes aren't lying to us, but DHS is. Seeing a murder followed by state-sponsored lies shocks the conscience. [1/3]

Everyone deserves to worship and learn without fear. Today’s news is a stark, painful reminder how much work we still must do to make that world a reality. [3/3]

It is agonizing to watch fear grow in our communities—whether it is the fear of antisemitism faced by our Jewish neighbors or the fear of campus gun violence faced by our students. [2/3]

I’m heartbroken by two horrific attacks in the last 24 hours. From a Chanukah celebration in Sydney to a college campus at Brown, we have seen two spaces that should be safe shattered by violence. And while those attacks took place many miles from Raleigh, I also know pain is felt here too. [1/3]

My op-ed this morning on the budget and how reckless GOP tax cuts actually cost us money. Thanks for sharing, @bsexton.bsky.social!

We're all feeling the pinch, and it is time for us to retake the legislature so that we can make North Carolina affordable, free, and fair again--a place where everyone has a chance to thrive instead of a place where the scales are tilted toward those who already have the most.

Our state is falling short due to failed policies from the General Assembly that have divested from our state and its people.

Candidate filing announcement! I'm excited to be running to continue serving District 40 in the North Carolina House. During my time in the House, I've fought to be your advocate on everything from common-sense gun reforms, to teacher pay, to free and fair elections. And the work isn't nearly done.

Republicans in Raleigh agree on how to fund Medicaid — and still walked away without getting it done. Three million North Carolinians depend on it. Doctors are being driven out. Patients are losing care. It’s time to come back and get this done. #ncpol #ncga #healthcare

Republicans are gerrymandering congressional districts again b/c they're TERRIFIED of accountability for their ruinous policies. Whether it's b/c they made NC last in US for healthcare costs or doubling peoples' insurance premiums, the last thing Republicans want is for voters to get a say. #ncpol

We’re not back in session until Aug. 26, and the bill sponsors say they’re open to more feedback. We'll have those conversations, and I'm grateful to all who came to the Judiciary 1 committee last week to advocate, and for everyone who reached out to legislators expressing concerns. More soon! Also, in the new HB 958, they're pushing a new requirement that voters give their full Social Security number to register to vote, despite federal law saying you can’t make someone provide do that to vote. And the bill still bans ranked choice voting without a chance for the public to decide. [4/6]

Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 04/08/2025
The bad news: Republicans slipped parts of this bill into the mini-budget that passed last week, including *seven new exempt positions for partisan hires.* [3/6]
110
Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 04/08/2025
They’ve also lengthened the time you can use an expired driver's license to vote, and they're relaxing the insane ballot-counting deadlines they imposed in December. But there’s still plenty to be concerned about. [2/6]

Quick update on HB 958, the bad elections bill we’ve been watching closely here in NC. Thanks to public advocacy, we’ve seen improvements. The provision banning election officials from encouraging voting is gone. The number of political hires at the State Board is cut from 25 to 5. [1/6]

3. Spread the word! This bill is bad for all North Carolinians of any political view. Let's build a coalition around free and fair elections in NC. See my previous posts for more info!

2. Come to the committee meeting if you can. The time isn't specific: it'll be 15 minutes after the full House voting session ends. I expect the full House to begin meeting at 1pm, but not confirmed. And I can't predict when that session will end. Could be short, could run to the late afternoon.

HB 958 is a dangerous step backward for NC elections. It bans election officials from encouraging people to vote (really!), and it turns experienced, nonpartisan election staff into partisan political appointees who don’t have to be qualified. It’s outrageous and not how we should run elections.

Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 25/07/2025
Important update on free and fair elections in NC! HB 958 will be heard in the House Judiciary 1 committee on Wednesday, July 31.

Thanks to everyone who came to the June 26 committee hearing. The process was disgraceful: no public comment allowed, and Republicans blocked my amendment to strip the partisan appointments from the bill. Here's some information on the bill and why it's so bad and unnecessary. [2/4]

🚨 UPDATE: House Bill 958 – Politicizing Our Elections Board HB 958 would let partisan political appointees—handpicked by Republicans—replace one-third of the nonpartisan, career staff on the NC State Board of Elections. This is a direct threat to free and fair elections in North Carolina. [1/4]

Accountability is the hallmark of democracy. Elected officials worry they will be voted out of office if they pass bad laws, act dishonorably, or disregard their constituents. When so many no longer have to worry about being held accountable, democracy breaks down and you get today's tragedy. [5/5]
031
Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 03/07/2025
Nationwide, Republicans gain a net of about 16 seats due to gerrymandering, and over 80% of House seats are considered "safe," meaning we confidently know which party will win even 16 months before election day. [4/5]
120
Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 03/07/2025
It's worth recognizing that this kind of awful, unpopular legislation would never become law without the corruption that is partisan gerrymandering. North Carolina's gerrymandering is literally responsible for the margin of control in the U.S. House (3 seats). [3/5]
110
Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 03/07/2025
They'll explode the national debt (which they claim they care about), and all of this is just to help billionaires have even more money. This will be painfully felt in our rural communities in North Carolina, and it will literally cost lives. [2/5]
110
Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 03/07/2025
There's no democracy without accountability. Congressional Republicans just passed a massive and deeply unpopular bill that will gut Medicaid and throw 17 million people off their health insurance. [1/5]

Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
The sad irony is their strategy of tax cuts for the wealthy actually costs most people money--that's what happens when we're 50th in the country in healthcare affordability and $15 billion behind on roads. You're paying these costs, and you deserve an NCGA that invests in the future of NC. [3/3]

Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
Here in NC, our gerrymandered GOP majority has left us on the path to a *$3.5 billion deficit* in the next few years--even after they've ALREADY underinvested in the state for a decade and let everything from roads to schools to state services decay. [2/3]

Phil Rubin @philrubinnc.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
Like so many others, I'm angry and worried about the "tax cuts for billionaires" bill passed by the U.S. Senate. It'll add $3.3 trillion to the national debt while causing 12 million Americans to lose healthcare coverage by 2034. Those federal cuts will make our budget problems in NC worse. [1/3]

It's not all good news, though! The Judiciary 2 committee is hearing two OTHER bad bills tomorrow--SB 50 (letting 18-year-olds carry concealed firearms with no training) and SB 153 (the Senate's bad anti-immigrant bill). That meeting is at 1pm in Room 421 of the Legislative Office Building. [3/3]

Getting good questions: Why was it cancelled? Will it be back? I'll do my best to find out what I can, but your advocacy has been AMAZING on this and we should keep it up. It's still a bad bill and could come back in days, weeks, or months. Thanks for everything, and let's keep it up! #ncpol [2/3]
