Saw at Walgreens that Mountain Dew was three dollars for a 20oz bottle. THREE DOLLARS. These were 75 cents in the vending machines 25 years ago. That’s literally a 4x price increase. Is there RAM in pop now?

I'm probably going to get muted or blocked for this, but as a fellow science communicator, using AI-generated imagery/text is really a bad look all around. It not only steals from your fellow scientists because it's all trained on stolen data, it also makes up fake science.

“Agents like Muse are trying to convince us they’re just a cute little guy who lives in your pocket, and definitely not an always-open portal into the servers of a major surveillance company,” says @jathansadowski.com. My weekend report for @wired.com: www.wired.com/story/meta-m...

Meta’s Muse Is Adults-Only. Why Does It Look Like a Kids’ Toy?
Meta says Muse is just for adults, though its cuddly, Labubu-like mascot—and upcoming Tamagotchi-style AI device—may be disarming for users of all ages.

@davidpierce.xyz We’ve never met but you must host a bonus follow up episode of Version History for the TI calculators with me as guest. I’m part of @reckless.bsky.social’s era and the programming world that you touched on literally changed my life. I want to share that side of it all.

@theverge.com @andrewrweb.bsky.social @sringsmuth.bsky.social Microsoft’s “Grand Plan” for Halo sounds like something Trump would come up with. No snark, but just change this to “We love Halo. We have all the devs. We have the best devs. The fans deserve it and we’re gonna bring it to them!”

Painting the same butterfly at age 20 and 30. Never give up on your art!
Two digital paintings of the same large yellow-and-black tiger swallowtail butterfly. The one in the upper left is labeled "2016." It has a more painterly style with some questionable proportions and anatomy. The one on the bottom right is labeled "2026" and is far more realistic, to the point it looks as though it might come to life and flit off the page at any moment. It's hard to believe I've only been a scientific illustrator for ten years, though that really was a whole lifetime ago. Thank you HRT for letting me live this long. :)

On this date in 2001, I woke up in a 22-story hotel right between the twin towers in NY. I planned to linger till 10 a.m. But a last-minute meeting made me leave at 8:15, just 30 minutes before the first plane struck. The hotel was destroyed. I was saved. But we can never forget those who perished.

Everyone uses the iPad Mini as a point of reference when talking about the iPhone Duo. But I can't find a single video where someone has compared the two. @joannastern.bsky.social stuck a hot dog in a Duo, but didn't have an iPad Mini for comparison 🙁

I finally got myself a pair of the Nothing Headphone (1)s last week. So far they’re fantastic. Half the price of Apple’s AirPods Max, and they have one incredible feature those don’t. An on/off switch.

Got a good job down at the Data Center. I work on the line, and it's hard work but it's honest and the wage is fair; my family and I are grateful for it. I rivet the word "absolutely" onto the little apologies that chatbots do when they misunderstand a prompt.

As @reckless.bsky.social noted, it says something about our society that tech is willing to throw these features in their platforms to prevent AI content (some of which is fine) but need court orders before they’ll do anything about racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny or the like
