Regarding Cornell and media discussions and discussion of higher education, generally: stop calling them boys (and girls) and kids. These are adults. Their parents can refer to them, however they want. We should refer to them as adults.

The meaning of a phrase like “she loves god” is different than she loves Frank or she loves people. It is closer to “she loves dragons.” But even there it’s incomplete because if you told me that you loved dragons, I would not assume that you believe that dragons are real.

I love the idea that what makes a great film is the film itself. It’s hilarious nonsense. “asking a photographer what kind of camera he uses is like asking a chef what kind of oven they use.”

do people say they are lonely? Or what did they say about how lonely they are etc. which doesn’t make it not valid, obviously. But it’s a little bit like measuring how rich people are by asking them: how rich do you feel? Richness and loneliness are both social concepts at least as much as

One problem with the loneliness, epidemic is essentially semantic: What does it mean to be lonely/how do we know if someone is lonely? assuming we are not talking about an objective measure like: are you alone or how many people do you see or talk to on a daily basis, what we are measuring is:

Even if you can get them to acknowledge that, the reality is, he voted for Trump for any number of reasons as a package. Or at least those things have become culturally packaged as he has become someone who literally has DJT flags.

Of course, the reality is that most of us do not vote for anyone because of any particular issue or narrow set of issues. Like if anyone ever stuck a microphone in my face and asked me why I was going to vote for anyone it would be incomplete at best for me to say ‘the economy, education…

They would be doing it as the children and grandchildren etc of immigrants. I am in no meaningful way an 'Italian' etc. I wish I could speak Italian, but that would not make me Italian. Identity is subjective, but here is my default: you have a nationality by citizenship and/or residency...

My various ancestors who did not pass languages onto their children maybe should have, but the people who were born in the US are: Americans. If they were speaking Italian and German, for instance, they would not be doing so as Italian and German immigrants.

I just watched a long video about the importance of immigrant communities maintaining the language of their nation of origin. I have no problem with people speaking whatever language they want to speak. But when you are talking about people who were born in a country: they are not immigrants.
