We're delighted to share news in the attached press release that the Open Journals Collective has received a major award of $711,900 from the Gates Foundation to grow support infrastructure for community-governed journals! Want to know more about OJC? Visit www.openjournalscollective.org
Press Release

Date: 3 September 2026

We’re delighted to announce that Open Journals Collective (OJC) has been awarded a $711,900 grant by the Gates Foundation. This grant will enable OJC to scale its operations in 2027 and 2028.

Since launching on 29 January 2026, OJC has raised $2.6M in library investment for the first year of its programme. Funds raised will provide financial support to 278 diamond open access journals in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and science, engineering, technology and mathematics.

The 2-year grant will accelerate OJC’s development, including building core technical features that leverage current open infrastructure. These comprise usage dashboards for libraries and authors, financial reporting tools, and a community engagement hub for journals and publishers. It will also support the legal and financial groundwork needed to share raised library funds equitably and transparently across OJC’s journals collections.

Professor Caroline Edwards, OJC Executive Director, said of the award: “It’s fantastic that this grant from the Gates Foundation will strengthen OJC’s potential to offer a fairer alternative to Article Processing Charges and Transformative Agreements. Supporting OJC at this critical early stage is a strong endorsement of OJC’s community-governed approach to building open publishing infrastructure. This is the way to address inequities in the current academic publishing landscape and encourage university libraries to transition their budgets away from exploitative commercial agreements.”

Open Journals Collective is a Collective Community Interest Company (CIC) based in the UK. A CIC is a special type of limited company that exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. OJC is currently in the process of setting up a UK-based Charity, the Open Journals Collective Foundation, which will oversee the running of the CIC from 2027 onwards.

The Open Journals Collective has appointed @dqprogramming.bsky.social to develop its Impact Dashboard! This is a joint project with @openbookcollective.bsky.social and the OJC dashboard will provide data and metrics about the impact of OJC journals - we look forward to launching it soon!
PRESS RELEASE

For immediate release

Date: 14 August 2026

The Open Journals Collective appoints
DQ Programming to develop its Impact Dashboard.

The Open Journals Collective has appointed DQ Progamming as its technical partner to build and deliver the OJC Impact Dashboard. The Impact Dashboard will be an openly available web platform that allows users to explore data and metrics about OJC’s journals. It will draw on a variety of open data sources, providing insight into the impact of OJC’s journals in a single place.

This is a joint project with the Open Book Collective, and DQ Programming will be developing an Impact Dashboard for the OBC as part of the same project. The two dashboards will be customised to the needs of each organisation, but they will be grounded in a shared data model and two separate instances of the same front end user interface.

We are very pleased to be working with DQ Progamming to deliver this project, which is critical to the success of the Open Journals Collective. And we look forward to launching the first iteration of the dashboard, and then bringing in additional functionality through further phases of development.

DQ Programming provides technical and data expertise to organisations working in open publishing and open infrastructure. DQ Programming was established by Andy Byers and Martin Eve, and Andy Byers and Mauro Sanchez will be leading the work to develop the Impact Dashboard. DQ Programming has extensive knowledge of building applications for organisations such as OJC that are built in open source technologies and utilise open data sources.About the Open Journals Collective

Please contact the OJC Directors by email at memberships@openjournalscollective.org

Professor Caroline Edwards (Open Library of Humanities / Birkbeck, University of London) Joanna Ball (Directory of Open Access Journals)
Dr Rupert Gatti (Open Book Publishers / Trinity College, Cambridge)

Launched in January 2026, the Open Journals Collective is an international movement of scholars, libraries, and university-based publishers. Its mission is to challenge profit-driven publishing models by providing a community-governed infrastructure for diamond open access research that is free for both authors and readers.

The OJC is a non-profit Community Interest Company (16431892) registered in the UK.
