Helping spread the word about these brilliant guidelines that @canopyrobin.com and others have put together specifically for trans+ people (anywhere in the world) who do #fieldwork. Please do share in any networks you’re part of where this might be relevant 🤓🏳️‍⚧️🤓 inclusivefieldwork.leeds.ac.uk/trans/
ROLE?

Trans+ Guidelines

Transgender researchers face substantial inequity and risk when undertaking fieldwork. The guidelines on this page expand upon the PRIDE Guidelines for LGBTQ+ Inclusive Fieldwork by focusing specifically on the inclusion of trans+ identities.

Cartoon of fieldworkers
These guidelines were created through a series of focus groups with trans+ researchers and self-described allies, as part of the Pathways: Participatory Approaches to Trans-Inclusive Field Research project. The project was facilitated by and developed in collaboration with Dr Robin Hayward, who is a trans science communicator and scientist, and who consulted on the trans-inclusivity of the project throughout. The project was led by Professor Martin Zebracki, in collaboration with Dr Tilen Kolar, and was funded by the Research England Enhancing Research Culture Fund.

These guidelines use the term 'trans+' to refer to all identities under the trans umbrella, which may include non-binary and gender non-conforming or gender questioning identities, as well as binary transgender identities. The term ‘fieldwork’ is used to describe any work carried out beyond a researcher’s home institution. Fieldwork can be conducted nationally or internationally and can involve travelling to places that are new or familiar, local or remote, rural or urban. Fieldwork may also include conference attendance and visiting other institutions on a temporary basis.

Correction 8 October 2026: This story was updated on 8 October 2026 to clarify a summarised statement from the NWJCC. The original story said that in some cases patients had not met "the basic requirements for surgery", and that having an unsuitable BMI was a factor. This has been changed to reflect that the NWJCC had said that concerns had been raised as to whether, in some cases, patients met the basic requirements for surgery, and that those factors included BMI.

If you're interested, this is the NWJCC statement that the BBC misquoted. jcc.nhs.wales/news/update-...
Furthermore, information provided by clinicians and correspondence received raised concerns about whether some aspects of the assessment process before referral had been completed appropriately. These concerns included whether some patients met the basic requirements for surgery, including factors such as BMI and overall surgical fitness, and whether wider health needs had been fully considered before referral.

Another Council steps up for trans inclusion archive.ph/79oLS
Labour council brands single–sex spaces debate a 'manufactured moral panic' as it passes motion stating 'trans women are women'

A Labour-led council has claimed the furore over single-sex spaces is a 'manufactured moral panic' after it passed a motion stating 'trans women are women.'
Councillors in Oxford voted on Monday to ensure access to public toilets, community centres and homelessness services remains 'trans inclusive'.
It comes despite a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 defining 'sex' within the Equality Act as 'biological sex' and 'sex at birth'.
The motion was proposed by a Green councillor, who dubbed the Supreme Court verdict 'discriminatory', passing with just two votes against and two abstentions.
A Labour amendment doubled down on the motion – adding public and workplace toilets should remain trans inclusive 'to the maximum permissible by law'.

From the early 2020s, these strands converged with far-right street mobilisation, US-linked litigation strategies and an increasingly sympathetic Conservative government, producing the most consequential phase of anti-gender activity in the UK's recent history - culminating in the Supreme Court's 2025 ruling. Throughout, the UK has functioned as an international reference point for the transnational anti-gender movement, its legal strategies. organisations and individual cases regularly amplitied across European and US conservative networks.

SHORT-TERM OUTLOOK
The United Kingdom is entering a period of consolidation for the anti-gender movement. The Supreme Court's April 2025 ruling in For Women Scotland has fundamentally shifted the legal terrain, and so-called "gender critical" organisations are well-positioned to use litigation to extend its effects into healthcare, prisons, sport and schools. On trans healthcare and education, the current Labour government shows no sign of reversing course: the indefinite puberty blocker ban, the RSHE guidance and the forthcoming KCSIE framework all signal absorption of key so-called "gender critical" positions as
policy. I he conversion practices ban, promised since 2018, remains uncertain in its trans-inclusive form under sustained lobbying from religious and so-called "gender critical' organisations.
The most significant medium-term risk comes from the electoral trajectory of Reform UK, whose demonstrated willingness to use executive power against LGBTIQ+ visibility at local level.
, and continued rise in national opinion polls
beyond the local level.

Forbidden Colours’ Hate Review specifically highlights the Supreme Court ruling and Code of Practice as reflecting the coordinated anti-gender movement in the UK. www.forbidden-colours.com/hate-review/ www.forbidden-colours.com/hate-review/... [Alt text continues on next post]
UNITED KINGDOM
CURRENT LANDSCAPE
The United Kingdom has achieved significant legal progress on the rights of LGBTIQ+ people over the period but is now marked by acute and accelerating pressure specifically on the rights of trans people. Abortion is legal under the Abortion Act 1967 and was decriminalised for women in England and Wales in 2025, though anti-abortion organisations remain well-organised and buffer zones for women accessing abortion services only came into force in October 2024. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2014 in England, Wales and Scotland, and since 2020 in Northern Ireland, granting full family rights. Legal gender recognition remains medicalised under the Gender Recognition Act 2004, reform has been blocked at both Westminster and Holyrood, and the UK Supreme Court's April 2025 ruling that "sex" in the Equality Act refers to "biological sex" has further narrowed the practical protections available to trans people. There are no specific legal protections for intersex individuals. In education, revised statutory guidance introduced in July 2025 frames gender identity as a matter of "significant debate".
The trajectory of anti-gender activity in the UK over the last decades has moved through three broad phases.
In the early 2000s, the movement was led by religious institutions and Conservative politicians mobilising against the repeal of Section 28 and, a decade later, against equal marriage - deploying faith networks. obstruction in the House of Lords and mass petition campaigns. From 2017, a new and distinctly British phenomenon emerged: a well-resourced so-called "gender critical" movement, framing opposition to trans inclusion not as religious conservatism but as feminist detence of women's so-called "sex-based rights, giving the anti-gender movement mainstream respectability and media embedding it had previously lacked
- later medicalised through the 2024 Cass Review and exported internationally.

Ah hah! Knew it! www.rnz.co.nz/life/wellbei...
Screenshot from the above webpage that reads:

The conditions are different outside
There are a couple of key reasons why running outside might feel harder than on a treadmill.
First, when you run outside, you push into the ground to propel yourself forward. But when you are running on a treadmill, the belt moves under your feet, helping with this propulsion (albeit very slightly). Basically, the machine does a small amount of the work for you.
Second, there’s air resistance outside. Research has suggested running on a treadmill is slightly easier because there is no air resistance caused by wind or even a slight breeze.
Studies show setting the treadmill to a 1 percent incline makes it more similar to running outside, by mimicking the difficulty added by air resistance.
Finally, the undulating terrain you have to deal with outside can make running more challenging. Even a small hill can make you work harder than when running on flat ground.

Like, the code of practice literally explains how paragraph 28 is supposed to work here. www.equalityhumanrights.com/sites/defaul...
Gender reassignment discrimination and separate and single-sex services
13-57
If a service provider provides single- or separate sex services for women and men, or provides services differently to women and men, they should treat transsexual people according to the gender role in which they present.
However, the Act does permit the service provider to provide a different service or exclude a person from the service who is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or who has undergone gender reassignment. This will only be lawful where the exclusion is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate.

Also, if anyone at all had actually referenced the Code of Practice, all of the things they were tying themselves in knots about would’ve been very clearly answered. But they didn’t. The EHRC deliberately didn’t. The case was a car crash.
This document is a Statutory Code of Practice. This is the authoritative,
comprehensive and technical guide to the detail of law. It will be invaluable
to lawyers, advocates, human resources personnel, courts and tribunals,
everyone who needs to understand the law in depth, or to apply it in practice.

The judges couldn’t make head or tail of that example, which upholds the principle that inclusion according to presenting gender is the default and exclusion is the exception, so they just decided that explanatory notes were problematic. 2/
221. There is nothing in the wording of this provision to indicate that paragraph 28 was
directed specifically at those holding a GRC, nor is there any basis for concluding that
this is its likely context as the Inner House suggested at para 56. (The example given in
the explanatory notes at para 740 also does not distinguish between transexual people
with a GRC and those without: “A group counselling session is provided for female
victims of sexual assault. The organisers do not allow transsexual people to attend as they
judge that the clients who attend the group session are unlikely to do so if a male-to-
female transsexual person was also there. This would be lawful”). We can see nothing to
support the Inner House’s conclusion that “the importance of this paragraph is that it
provides the only basis upon which a person might be permitted to exclude a person with
a GRC from services which are provided for their acquired sex”. Nor is the EHRC correct
to assert that paragraph 28 is redundant on a biological interpretation of sex. On the
contrary, if sex means biological sex, then provided it is proportionate, the female only
nature of the service would engage paragraph 27 and would permit the exclusion of all
males including males living in the female gender regardless of GRC status. Moreover,
women living in the male gender could also be excluded under paragraph 28 without this
amounting to gender reassignment discrimination. This might be considered
proportionate where reasonable objection is taken to their presence, for example, because
the gender reassignment process has given them a masculine appearance or attributes to
which reasonable objection might be taken in the context of the women-only service being
provided. Their exclusion would amount to unlawful gender reassignment discrimination
not sex discrimination absent this exception.

And please: PUBLISHERS Stop making deals for AI-produced books, when you know how much this harms authors and undermines our creative industry.
Harriman House will publish what it says is a trade publishing first with The Everything Code, a new book by macro analyst and entrepreneur Raoul Pal that has been produced using a proprietary Al tool trained exclusively on the author's own existing work.
The Pan Macmillan business and finance imprint describes the title as "human-originated, AI-facilitated". Commissioning editor Nick Fletcher and Sally Tickner, head of business development and partnerships, acquired rights directly from Pal, with publication planned worldwide in paperback, audio and e-book in November 2026.
According to the publisher, Pal wanted to turn his existing body of economic analysis into a book but
"would never have had the time to write" it.
Harriman House therefore worked with sister company CHAPTR to develop Weave, a secure proprietary Al application grounded on Pal's archive of previously published material,

The Commissioner is concerned about the current climate for trans people. Although they constitute a very small proportion of the population, and face acute marginalisation across all areas of life, trans people have been subject to intense political and public debate and scrutiny, including in the wake of the Supreme Court's judgment in For Women Scotland Ltd. v. The Scottish Ministers. He observes a tendency to see the human rights of different groups as a zero-sum game, when in reality any tensions will likely be exceptional; nuanced, reasonable and balanced accommodations can be found. He deplores that discussions tend towards the exclusion of trans people from many aspects of society, rather than ensuring that their inclusion and dignity are upheld. The Commissioner reiterates that all relevant legal or policy developments must be human rights-compliant, including in view of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and other international instruments.

They, of course, were subject to the whims of the then prime minister Boris Johnson, who could have been replaced with three ferrets in a sack and the only change would have been a slight increase in decisiveness and gravitas, so, to them, Sturgeon seemed a paragon of sober governance, treating Scotland to almost nightly presidential-style podium appearances in which she delivered admonitions with an appropriately dour countenance.
Her English fans can't be expected to know about every single clusterfuck over which the supposedly competent Sturgeon presided, and they certainly won't find out about them from Frankly. The mysteriously vanished government WhatsApp messages from the pandemic, the tanking educational outcomes, the CalMac Ferry disaster, the disappearance of a half a million pounds of her own supporters' money that was supposedly ringfenced for a new independence referendum: you'll search in vain for candid accounts of these in Frankly, indeed, most aren't mentioned at all. Perhaps the most disgraceful omission - and I'll admit to a personal interest here, because I'm married to a doctor who used to run a methadone clinic, so saw the national scandal up close - is the fact that Scotland continues to lead the whole of Europe in drug deaths.

G.O. 1.3
Essential requirements of the Paris Principles
Encouraging ratification or accession to international human rights instruments
Encouraging ratification of, or accession to international human rights instruments, and the effective implementation of international human rights instruments to which the state is a party, is a key function of an NHRI. The Paris Principles further prescribe that NHRIs should promote and encourage the harmonization of national legislation, regulations and practices with these instruments. The SCA considers it important that these duties form an integral part of the enabling legislation of an NHRI. In fulfilling this function, the NHRI is encouraged to undertake activities which may include the following:
- monitoring developments in international human rights law;
- promoting state participation in advocacy for and the drafting of international human rights instruments; and
- conducting assessments of domestic compliance with and reporting on international human rights obligations, for example, through annual and special reports and participation in the Universal Periodic Review process.
NHRIs should, in encouraging their governments to ratify international human rights instruments, advocate that this be done without reservations.
JUSTIFICATION
Sections A.3(b) and (c) of the Paris Principles require that NHRIs have the responsibility to
"promote and ensure the harmonization of national legislation, regulations and practices with the international human rights instruments to which the State is a party, and their effective implementation". Additionally, the NHRI has the responsibility "to encourage ratification of [these] instruments or accession to those instruments, and to ensure their implementation"
In practice this requires NHRIs to review relevant national laws, regulations and policies to determine that they are compatible with the obligations arising from international human rights standards and propose the amendment or repea…

I guess this guy’s publication date might be getting delayed then 🫠🫠🫠
Screenshot of an article from the bookseller magazine that reads:

Harriman House therefore worked with sister company CHAPTR to develop Weave, a secure proprietary Al application grounded on Pal's archive of previously published material, speeches, intellectual property and analytical
