Well guess what: the last lot of tickets are now on sale from October 4th! The call for papers is open until 11 October too, so get those reckons submitted now, while there's still time! events.humanitix.com/baacon-1

I’ve been doing this for a while now when discussing LLMs etc. “ChatGPT says…” -> “The generated output/response”. Really don’t want to encourage the misconception that these algorithms are capable of thought or reason

I’m convinced the google play store review process is entirely AI at this point. Submitted a new app version yesterday, approved, released. Realised you have to upload the app icon for the store listing manually (why?), submit new icon -> rejected, need to change requested permissions for app

This Flock camera is running obsolete, end-of-life software. - It's on Android 8.1, released in 2017, support ended in 2021 - It's on Android patch level 2018-06-5 - It's running Linux 3.18, released in 2017 This shit is like 8 or 9 years old, and full of vulnerabilities.

doesn’t work for everyone, especially if your destination isn’t near a train line or you need to be there before 9, but the Te Huia train service has been fantastic for my quarterly work trips to Auckland from Hamilton. Anything to avoid Auckland traffic.

but, when you start outsourcing concepts that are *very* fundamental with a high degree of agency, like problem solving, decision making, creativity, artistry, craftsmanship, and communication? you're slowly sacrificing yourself to a prediction machine. you run the risk of losing yourself

I started teaching programming at highschools a few weeks after learning to code myself. I taught it all through my undergrad and master’s. I loved it. The last semester I taught it, there was so much LLM use by the class it killed all my passion in continuing in academia.

there used to be a strong correlation between seeing neat things online, and the person who made it: 1. is very knowledgeable and passionate about it 2. put love and care into it 3. is getting recognition for it but that trust is now gone, the grifters skipped to step 3, the slop ghouls have won

It's honestly nice to hear that most of the AI bubble really is people play-acting to keep their jobs: hermit-tech.com/blog/ai-mani... Doctorow has a big essay on this, but I prefer the source (this isn't an outsider, they're a high profile tech consultant actively mixing it up in the biz)

I don’t want to be too sensationalist about this but also I’m the least violent person in the world and I think if someone said this to my face I’d hit them
"A physical book is a delivery mechanism for information," it continues.
"Once that information has been extracted and encoded into an Al model, the delivery mechanism has served its purpose. What remains is paper, ink, and binding material. The book is not destroyed. Its value has migrated.
The paper returns to the material cycle; the knowledge enters the intellectual one."

I keep thinking about how often the mass layoffs in media, government and big companies, especially women and people of color, will lead to poorer outcomes for years because the people who would point out potential problems or blind spots were deemed non-essential, a "bad fit", and/or too expensive.

haven’t done much besides play PoE2 for half an hour. I’ve been wanting to get away from windows (as much as I can while still playing EAC games lol) but every time I’ve tried daily driving linux it has invented even more fucked up ways of screwing me over than windows - maybe that’s just Ubuntu

I did finally get SteamOS running on my R9 5900X + 9070 XT system. 3.8.10 had an issue where it would shutdown NetworkManager whenever it was in game mode (kinda the point of the OS for me). I swapped to 3.9 via terminal (cos I couldnt finish setup in game mode) and everything worked fine
