The Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) are a key input to #ClimateChange mitigation & adaptation research... The #SSP Extensions Explorer provides related indicators - and we just added a new #dataviz-explorer feature and new stories on the risk of hunger and the conflict trap.

A person on a bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient among animals and machines per distance traveled relative to body weight. The bicycle is magic. www.jstor.org/stable/24923...
A graph titled "Cost of Transport" showing the relationship between body weight (in kilograms) and energy consumption for distance traveled (calories per gram per kilometer) for various animals and machines. It highlights that a person on a bicycle ranks first in efficiency.

Few people know this: half of the world's energy use is for heat used in buildings and industry. And almost all of it is from burning fossil fuels. That's why we need to decarbonise heat if we want to stand a chance of meeting our climate targets.

“We found there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10% then driving in that city went up by 10%.” Still one of the best articles on why building bigger roads leads to more driving. What's Up With That: Building Bigger Roads Actually Makes Traffic Worse
The concept is called induced demand, which is economist-speak for when increasing the supply of something (like roads) makes people want that thing even more. Though some traffic engineers made note ...

To be clear, we do have plans for scaling, we just kinda expected more than a couple days notice before getting blasted with a million new users a day. The team is rapidly deploying fixes and new software to adapt. More servers in the mail.

Findings from #CivilSociety workshop in #SouthAfrica #Coal region - #JETP policies must broaden to address food, water, & land justice - Current focus (of money) targeting #EVs & #H2 investments are based on demand of the rich / Global North, ignoring immediate local needs 1/3

You see the printed black square from a page in Robert Fludd's "Utriusque cosmi maioris" (1617) that represented the nothingness that was prior to the universe. The square is framed by four sentences in Latin: "Et sic in infinitum" (And so on to infinity). #earlymodern #skystorians

A quick version of the same point for the few oil and gas majors that disclose the volume of carbon captured (or have any operational CCS at all) (An industry-wide version of this would look significantly funnier and I will create this when I have time)
a chart showing 2,500 megatonnes of emissions from shell, exxon, chevron and equinor, and only 10 captured by those same companies

Important new investigation by the excellent @emmahoward.bsky.social at @unearthednews.bsky.social (follow her)🙏 It finds Exxon, Total, Shell, Chevron Phillips & Dow, members of a plastic pollution alliance, made 1000 times more plastic than they cleaned up👉 unearthed.greenpeace.org/2024/11/20/a...
Graph shows how Exxon, Total, Shell, Chevron Phillips and Fow produced over 131 million tonnes of plastic, but only removed less than 120,000 tonnes.
