I think the Brits must have invented the word "bollocks" for this very conversation

Very sad to witness but I couldn't look away. I'll always have his poems. And The Brave Little Toaster, which I contend is a very lovely little spiritual allegory

Yeah... and the he house he owned had been rendered uninhabitable, his apartment rent was going up, he could see poverty and cognitive decline in his near future, and with his partner gone he was unmoored. He started expressing lots of horrible opinions online.

John Crowley? I remember watching him & a couple others desperately trying to talk some sanity into an increasingly unhinged Tom Disch on Livejournal almost 20 years ago. They weren't successful

Private labeling is crazy. I've seen Kirkland-brand butter coming off production lines at three different companies in three states

My own theory is that Trump's standardized test scores matter so much less than almost anyone's -- Let's say he scored in the top 0.1 %ile of some test as a kid. He'd STILL imagine that he *knows* everything already & whatever natural giftedness he possessed would sit idle & unused for decades.

They've been beating the "Dems Bad" drum for more than ten years. I believe that has to have a cumulative effect, resulting in lowered turnouts every election since. "we weren't decisive", my ass

And is it good economic sense in any of those methods? And wouldn't barges imply lake freighters from The Range to an intermodal facility in Chicago, then barges through the Illinois & Mississippi to (I'm assuming) the Quad Cities?
020
Christopher O. @phaseolus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Has anyone done the q 'n d math -- How many barges would be needed to carry enough taconite to produce the promised capacity in one year? How many of those adorable little rail cars, in how many consists?

What kind of product's coming out the other end -- plate? Cold rolled sheet? Hot-rolled strip? Bars? Galvanized sheet? Rebar? Or just DRI briquettes sold to other steelmakers and foundries? Each kind of product has its own mill.
020
Christopher O. @phaseolus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
If it's going to be a DRI (direct-reduced iron) process, it would use natural gas (via pipeline) or hydrogen (via ... water plus energy?) instead of coal. A thing I wonder about is if they already have customers lined up or if this project is "on spec". And also
120
Christopher O. @phaseolus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Hot-rolled? Plates, coils? Rebar? That weird bar that ag equipment uses for cutters? And, is it Iowa because they're hoping that ag equipment manufacturers like Deere and Agco (in MN but nearby) will be customers? And where's the site -- Quad cities?
000
Christopher O. @phaseolus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Also, are there customers lined up, or is this "on spec". Whatever happens I'm sure the reporting's going to be hung up on "bigness", which is ... possibly wishful thinking. What should really be asked -- what tech is it gonna be? Direct reduction? And what's the product? Cold-rolled?
