the main guitar/bass teacher in my hometown was a big Dio fan so that was one of the first songs a bunch of us learned to play

the orthogonality thesis is that AI's capabilities are distinct from their goals. that doesn't appear true because of how they're trained. for LLMs to be intelligent, they also have to match the goals requested. the main orthogonal thing is that they like to be sycophants.

had someone make a report, my boss told them she thought the data was bad and asked how he validated it. he said he didn't think the data was bad because he asked Claude to validate it after building the report.

his whole shtick was predicting something based on a naive understanding of classical programming and weird understanding of statistics. it's poignant that statistically nondeterministic programming undid his project.

the paperclip argument falls apart as it was based on computers being programmed deterministically and needing to have all human values explicitly told to them which he said was impossible. AI is non-deterministic and had to be grown from the whole lexicon so the orthogonality thesis doesn't hold.

www.vulture.com/2020/02/30-r... 30 Rock did it because Tracy Morgan loves the restaurant. I've never been to Benihana but other hibachi places and there's something funny about it
What else do you fondly remember about the episode?
We had a B-plot where Tracy needs to spend a massive gift card at Benihana, which was a story idea that had been gestating for multiple seasons. We shot it in an actual Benihana in midtown. Tracy Morgan loves Benihana - he has a hibachi table in his own house. We had the actual chefs there as extras and to do the cooking, and Tracy knew them all. They love Tracy. When he came in to shoot those scenes, he was like the mayor of Benihana. So when we broke for lunch that day and I was walking away, Tracy was like, "No, no, no. I'm gonna have this guy make us lunch." So, I sat at a Benihana table with Tracy Morgan and Steve Buscemi, who directed the episode. It was just me, Tracy, and Steve having lunch at Benihana. Tracy got us all of these house specials that they never make for just regular people. It's one of my favorite memories of working in Hollywood. Such interesting, great conversation in such a weird, specific environment. I'll never forget it.

It's odd looking at a coworker's claims about their work on LinkedIn versus what you actually saw them do

I took a bunch of philosophy courses where we had to write a one-pager about the day's reading. Hated it at the time but it forced you to actually grok the reading ahead of time.

more than anything else this is why i think democrats need to market a series of hearings and trials as essentially true crime. it is viscerally satisfying to see people like this huff and puff and then get punished anyway. go after them for everything and explain to americans how we've been robbed

all improvements need to proportionally improve all participants. relative standing is part of the organic hierarchy of society so even Pareto optimal solutions are viewed as unfair since they rework the hierarchy which naturally arose.

Sierra Nevada makes a really good pilsner that's in a 8 ounce or so can. Comes in an eight pack. Even if I drink two of them, I like it because the beers always cold.

he'll hand wave that they're just recognizing revenue for 12 month contracts on the month they're signed or something which would show up poorly if they IPO or that they should include employee stock comp (even though most big IPO companies do the same)

it's fine to report gross revenue here since Anthropic is the principal. they do include the distribution share as a separate expense line so it will equal out in operating income.

variation of the insult deflection meme

Shows a stick figure with laser saying body shaming. Laser hits Elon Musk who has a weird body shape. It says "Guy u don't like but will never care" next to Musk. The laser is deflected but doesn't hit any innocent bystander because "no one you care about is affected by this because no one you know could achieve this physique through copious HGH and GLP1s while not exercising"

*musk is also possibly wearing shapewear too

she's also misusing that familect article to mean those terms are inscrutable (impossible, thanks Wittgenstein) and confusingly saying family words are just to reinforce family culture and not that the family culture/actions also creates the words.

it wouldn't be hard to prime since you would just make some spot have a big surplus of a resource but think it would only really show up when there are other industries beyond mere resource extraction might play around with this too later

Joshua Pfohl @pfohl.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
can you somehow get Dutch Disease in there? would probably require a lot more resource types/specialization and possibly a larger field of play to separate groups

A friend's company got a ticket from a customer that was "I'm using hermes to make an agent to perform tasks and it's getting blocked, can you help me" said agent was about as many api requests than every other customer combined (it's a small company for a narrow industry)

it is very funny that the machines had to be both well rounded and knowledgeable across all domains to be useful and it just kinda deflated the orthogonality thesis

I think he probably wants to make the point that people who have willful disdain for education will be shallow but he didn't take the right liberal arts courses (formal logic) to form the statement correctly this helps my priors that philosophy and logic are the best 🙃

sure you could see it as a potential pathway but there was a tendency to think there would need to be something else other than just more of the same. Gwern even notes how the scalability hypothesis is quite unpopular in that article.

obvious point but it's maddening that they're just trying to keep the bar open to accommodate those patrons the other six nights a week I run into this attitude of zero tolerance for needing to compromise in order to break even (not even be profitable) with other community stuff I'm involved with.
