Once you've branded an "official" Atmosphere icon, add it to the Bluesky profile page for any app/site which: • publishes its own lexicons, +/or • lists other lexicons it supports The former can be done immediately (via DNS lookup), while the latter would rely on a new com.atproto lexicon (TBD)

Positioning seven use cases for code generation along two axes of autonomy -- participatory vs. consequential
Schematic graph of the impact of LLM code generation on:

"Multiplicatores

Those who multiply.
Senior engineers with agent fleets."

Consequential autonomy increases, but
Participatory autonomy fallsSchematic graph of the impact of LLM code generation on:

"Petitores

The graduate intake, barred."

Zero consequential autonomy,

Annoying composer bug in 1.132 on Android for @esb.lol et al Looks like the line wrap logic goes kablooey if you have more than one linked facet (hashtag or link) + then keep typing. Only takes one more character -- in this case, a question mark -- to cause disruptions to an earlier line

Tip for lexicon designers Notice how certain club.papers.entry fields (github.com/be-green/pap...) are defined as a subset of the corresponding CSL-JSON schema used by a wide range of bibliographic software github.com/citation-sty... No need to reinvent the wheel if reuse can make interop easier

👀 Dunno why -- maybe the open-ended interactivity, maybe the sparse design -- but this faceted #UX (for browsing RDF graphs) kinda reminds me of sifting through: • tabular data with rowboat.net • AT records with @pds.ls • etc.

More than 10,000 PhDs have left the federal government. Much federal research now works within an actionable science framework. More can be done to support science-to-society pathways; however, basic research, which requires high risk and some unsuccessful efforts, remains extremely important.

nice post from Daniel Litt on the same www.daniellitt.com/blog/2026/9/...
The allocative aspects of our job (hiring, graduate admissions, etc.) are in dire need of reform if we want to retain human mathematical expertise. Broadly speaking I think we should focus on rewarding skill in the parts of our jobs that cannot be automated: the internal (e.g. understanding mathematics) and social-relational parts, and operationalizations that hew as closely to those aspects of the profession as possible. For example, talks and sustained mathematical discussion now demonstrate understanding much better than papers. Once AI systems improve at exposition and “digestion,” this will be even more the case. We already interview faculty hires; we must now do the same for graduate admissions.

I think we should try to foster a robust seminar culture in which speakers are expected to explain their topic to the audience’s satisfaction. Much has been written recently (by myself among others) about the fact that we are primarily interested in understanding, not merely the truth value of mathematical statements. If that is the case, let us make sure we actually understand each other.

Ink & Switch's approach of being forward-looking while staying uncompromising on both the value of intention in what you make and the necessity of shaping the world to match your and your community'´s system of values is (in my opinion) the most essential message in software right now
A quote from Peter van Hardenberg, the lab director of Ink & Switch, from his talk "How to Research Tools for Thought":

"I would encourage everybody to think about how – as we're moving through this new world – that we are intentional about how we shape it. And I don't want to tell you whether you should or shouldn't adopt any particular technology, but I will tell you that the world will not wait for us – and that we need to figure out how we can engage with our values and our intentions, and how we can serve our communities to make sure that the people who are using these tools that we build and that other people build are able to do them in safe and trustworthy ways, but also in ways that are satisfying and joyful and let us have what we set out to do."

And you have to ask yourself: why was it worth $22M to them? Because to them math is just their most successful PR bid, (since the claims of AGI aren't sticking). They are betting that the (false) claim "We solved math, so we can solve everything" will gain them way more than $22M in market share.

At ~$0.07/kWh for electricity alone, $22M buys ~310 million kWh. A human spending 100W on average consumes ~64,000 kWh in 75 years. So $22M corresponds to the lifetime metabolic energy of roughly 4,800 people. This is brute force, not intelligence.

This is excellent. There's a huge AI PR campaign using academics. The least we can do to minimise this is to NOT disclose which brand and model of LLM was used. Unlike measuring equipment, if you're using LLMs responsibly it doesn't matter what produced it because you will have verified its accuracy
