We're working on our processes. Current plan is to have a weekly release cadence, more or less – we want the new stuff out quickly, but not so quickly we're continuously bothering our users with update prompts.

I've really enjoyed the design work on these - we wanted the button styling to resemble gaming tiles, like mahjong or (more recently!) Azul, and we fine-tuned the interaction effects to give them a little life and personality. Have as many bookmarks/pins as you like - it will scroll!

Keep your cards close with our graph shortcuts - one for different node types, another for your entities. The default card for an entity can be customised as well, so they're ready to go with a click. Added or removed entities from this board? Sync up! #narrativedesign #uiux #toolsdev #gamedev

Sadly, this is another casualty of the most right-wing government in Finnish history. Homelessness is on the rise again, as is child poverty and so many other measures of societal failure.

Sometimes you have to compromise to make conflicting requirements work. We want Tarinoi to be unopinionated, but we also want you to be able to see how your story reacts to game state, without leaving the app. Here's how we squared that circle. #gamedev #tooldev tarinoi-works.com/blog/game-st...

Squaring A Circle – Game State Preview
Tarinoi is unopinionated: your game, your mechanics, your way to make it. At the same time, it's really useful to be able to preview your game state in the editor playback. Here's the compromise we la...

Formal affordances are the elements that pull a player toward certain actions, they “cry out” for the player to take those actions. Material affordances are the actions a system actually allows the player to take. Agency occurs when the two are in balance. (Mateas 2001)

A propos of nothing, I have a strange need for self-punishment in that I get unreasonably addicted to games where bad die rolls can ruin your day. Sunk way too much time into Battle Brothers.

Did some profiling, tuning, and optimisation on the Kubernetes cluster running Tarinoi. Got downloads working about 25% faster, plus it blocks the thread less so the it scales significantly better to many concurrent users doing big downloads all at the same time. #tooldev #webdev #gamedev

It just occurred to me that I know how to operate a chainsaw. Even know how to sharpen the chain, it’s with that little rat-tail file. Very badly out of practice though. Is this unusual, I wonder?

My sci-fi writing project does feature AIs. Nobody thinks they're sentient. Their pronouns are "it." If they develop idiosyncracies that resemble a personality, that's considered a defect. I did not set out to write utopian science fiction but here we are. #scifi #writing

I think the "can games be art" debate is particularly silly because a lot of people on the "no" side agree that in the right context, a urinal or a black square are art. (FWIW, I agree with them on that point. But I can't see how you can hold that view and also think that games can't be art.)
"Fountain" by Marcel Duchamp. It's a signed urinal."Black Square" by Kasimir Malevich.

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

We've been gathering feedback from early users, and we got one message loud and clear: it'd be neat to be able to preview flows based on game state. We found a solution which gets about 90% there, enough for early work – and doesn't lock you out from rolling your own. #gamedev #tooldev

A side effect of trying to imagine what it would take for an off-Earth society to actually function, is that a lot of supposedly serious “build a city on the Moon” stuff I see makes me go “ya no that won’t work, collapse in 18 months tops.” Space be hard. We’re really not meant to be there.

Goddamn I love Werner Herzog so much. www.indiewire.com/features/int...
The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, “You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It’s phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it.” He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it. I said, “You are alone. There’s such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail.” And it is a failure, period.

It’s so standardized that AI can step in because there’s not real storytelling. It’s mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome AI to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it’s ad nauseam. When it’s ad nauseam, please, please, please let AI step in and do the job.
