How do you read Hengel's remarks on the origins of the Gospel titles? I've always taken Hengel to regard Mark's title at least as authorial ('geht auf Markus zurück'). And Baum comes very close in his reading of Hengel too.

This may be a big ask but does anyone have PDFs of Müller-Kessler & Sokoloff CCPA vols 1–3 (Gronigen 1997–8)? Many thanks in advance!

Who are some of the more recent prominent proponents of the Pauline authorship of Eph? Honest question (coming from a conservative, though that shouldn’t matter)!

Anyone with a recent-ish experience with ZAC? Wondering what their turnaround (submission-decision) is like these days.

After a week back on Twitter, my first impression is that the engagement there is considerably greater, though most of the academics from my ‘bubble’ are no longer active or have deleted their accounts downright. Yet the quietness of this space, while gloriously lacking in toxicity, depresses me.

And now some of these super-reliable AI detection apps also offer to 'humanise' your text. Way to go, robots!

Peter Malik @petrosmalik.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I repeated the experiment with longer chunks of texts, using Pangram again. So, I pasted the paragraph that was initially flagged as 100% AI along with four preceding paragraphs, effectively quadroupling the amount of text. The result was 100% human.

I've recently experimented with Pangram AI detection software and, having worked with around 2000 words of academic text (too small a sample, admittedly) I'm not entirely confident in its detection capabilities.

I think I’ve found (inadvertently) a way to cite one of the Paddington bear books in an academic work. I can’t say I’m displeased.

I’m seriously considering returning to Twitter. This place is as dead as the Slovak economy.

Today, my ISBTF email account was deleted—another telltale sign that Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal is shutting down. Very sad to see a school that the Gestapo was unable to break fall victim to church politics and economy. Religious apathy is more lethal than persecution.

A brilliant, if harrowing, op-ed from a seasoned geologist called 'How scientometry is killing science'. What he writes is so relevant to other fields of study as well, particularly in European context. Note last sentence: 'Do not let us ever forget: More does not automatically mean better.'

I don't like posing a positive example (quite the contrary), but, despite a few failures, I always try to deliver peer-review within 1 month of accepting, ideally much sooner (i.e. under a week). I hate protracted periods of waiting for a decision and this is the least I can do to improve things.

Enjoying a dive into Holger Strutwolf’s FC. What a wide array of fine essays by such a battery of contributors. A testament, no doubt, to how many lives Holger has touched over the years.

criticaltexts.com/how-many-com... For decades, it's been widely claimed that there are about 60 complete Greek NT manuscripts. But what qualifies as “complete”? And are there really 60 manuscripts that meet that criterion? This post examines these questions in light of the manuscript evidence.

Three months ago, I submitted to JBL. Normally, by this time an editorial manager website would go something like 'Decision pending' or, at least, 'Awaiting reviewer reports'. On JBL website, however, it's been 'Under review' from Day 1. The suspense is killin' me!

Rude journal editors (especially to early-career authors) are reason enough to boycott the journal. Discuss.

Over the years, one of the things that’s kept me sane is being intentional about incorporating a solid dose of fiction into my daily reading routine. As of recent I’ve really enjoyed Red Rising series. Any tips from my Bsky peeps?

Just heard a recent account of someone submitting an article where they disagreed with someone, whom the editor then assigned as a peer-reviewer. Plus, the reviewer knew the person and their argument, having interacted with them at a different venue. How many cases of malpractice can you count?

It'd be pretty nice to work on a piece that's shorter than 15,000 words for a change. Ah yes, that would be the article I'm supposed to be co-authoring, which I have no time to write because I'm working on all these impossibly long manuscripts!

Over the years, reading fiction has proved to be one of the key ways of preserving the remnants of this academic's mental health. Always have a novel at hand throughout the term time, but tend to ramp it up during holidays. Any tips—esp. more recent, lesser known authors/books I should check out?

Happy to report that the ZNW has accepted my new edition of GMatt pages in Codex Climaci Rescriptus for publication! This is the fourth and most likely also the last instalment of my editorial work on this manuscript to be published as an article.

For some reason, every time I edit a palimpsest section, I leave the most difficult page for the end. Then I spend 500% more time on it than I did on any of the previous ones. The upside is that the end is, finally, in sight.

What are your thoughts on using contractions like don’t or isn’t in academic prose? Most of the time I find them annoying, but they do sneak into my writing on occasion. This one is one of my favourites:

Every year I have a major FOMO for not being able to attend the ELF. I only attended once, back in 2007, and had a most delightful time. May is just a very inconvenient time for travelling, particularly with 4 children.
