Turns out the Martyrs of Palestine and Pamphilus of Caesarea are chick-magnets. I just found out that Liz Penland, Erica Carotenuto and myself have a predecessor. The Pamphilos entry in Pauly-Wissowa by "E. Hoffmann" is not by an Ernst but an Eva.

Open eighteenth-century printed book showing a title page with a large rectangular cavity cut through hundreds of pages. The hollowed-out compartment, carved into the paper block to conceal a small object, reveals the layered edges of the pages and creates a hidden compartment within the book.

July 15, 2026, 12:30 PM EDT, on zoom

Text In box: MATTHEW TAPIE (Associate Professor of Theology and Director, Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies, Saint Leo University) investigates the infamous 1858 abduction of Edgardo Mortara, a six-year-old Jewish boy taken from his family by Vatican authorities after a secret baptism. The book examines how the Mortara family and the Vatican's papal counsel both relied upon the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas to argue their opposing sides.
Tapie’s study demonstrates that Aquinas argued parental authority is an unalterable principle of natural law that must not be violated. The study connects these debates to modern Catholic-Jewish relations.
With Providence College Theology faculty Holly Taylor Coolman, Thomas Bolin, and Arthur Urbano.
