Thanks to @gpotente.bsky.social for letting this happen. I enjoyed the discussions a lot. Interesting read, findings are somewhat surprising given what we know about the S-locus and its evolution.

Liverwort sex chromosomes are much more diverse than previously thought. Huge PAR, small SDR in Blasia pusilla, and some ideas about the ancestral/derived nature of homomorphic vs. heteromorphic UV sex chromosomes. link.springer.com/article/10.1... @gpotente.bsky.social @uzh-ch.bsky.social

Genome assemblies of the liverwort Blasia pusilla uncover a well-defined pseudoautosomal region on homomorphic UV sex chromosomes - Genome Biology
Background Sex chromosomes evolve from autosomes and are expected to be initially homomorphic, though they may become heteromorphic over time. In diploid systems, one sex chromosome often degenerates,...

Now published in Cell! We found that ~15% of SNPs from divergent refs did not liftover as SNPs in the gray fox ref—half mapped to monomorphic sites, half failed to map. Co-authored with Matthew Genchev, @elliecat.bsky.social, and @jazlynmooney.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Reference genome choice compromises population genetic analyses
Characterizing genetic variation in natural populations is vital to evolutionary biology; however, many non-model species lack genomic resources. Here…

Excited to share that my first News & Views is out in @natgenet.nature.com! Together with Yuling Yue and @peterszovenyi.bsky.social, we highlight a landmark study presenting 100+ bryophyte genome assemblies and what they reveal about plant evolution. 🔗 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The dawn of bryophyte genomics is here - Nature Genetics
Bryophytes are a widespread group of land plants that occupy nearly all biomes, yet their genetics and evolutionary history have long remained underexplored. Now, a study that generates extensive geno...

👋 Hi Bluesky! As a first post, I'm happy to share our new paper exploring what happens to sex chromosomes when a species transitions from separate sexes to cosexuality, using the liverwort Marchantia quadrata 🧬 Proud to share first authorship with Yukiko Yasui, with Péter Szövényi as senior author.
