New paper: Incoherence, referential and Fregean
I’m happy to report that my paper Incoherence, referential and Fregean has been accepted for publication in Synthese. You can download a preprint here. Structural irrationality, also known as incoherence, consists in the obtaining or failure to obtain of certain relations among the propositional contents of a subject’s attitudes. For instance, it is structurally irrational to believe in a proposition P and also believe its negation not-P.

Based almost entirely on something Tomer Ullman told me, and I hereby nominate him as First Dean of Shenanigans. COMIC ◆ www.smbc-comics.com/comic/shenan... PATREON ◆ www.patreon.com/ZachWeinersm... STORE ◆ smbc-store.myshopify.com
Part 1/2 of a 7-panel SMBC comic update. This first part has 3 panels. A man is speaking intensely at a podium. Over the course of 3 panels, he states the following: "ladies and gentlemen, I introduce a new field of ethics: shenanigansology. We have all these failed frameworks! Maximize happiness. Make universal rules. Be virtuous. bah! Maximizing happiness means killing one guy to save five! Universalizing moral rules means betraying friends to their killers in order to avoid lying! Virtue ethics gives you upstanding people in wicked societies, contributing to overall wickedness!"Part 2/2 of a 7-panel SMBC comic update. This second part has 4 panels. The man at the podium continues his explanation for 3 panels. He says "each framework only functions if you add 'and no shenanigans, you know what we mean.' And yet no branch of philosophy has even attempted to discover the fundamental nature of shenanigans! It is the dark matter of moral philosophy! We propose an institute for shenanigansology, conferring a doctorate in shenanigans, and public outreach on shenaniganic discoveries!" A person in the crowd responds by saying "I'm gonna recast my moral failings as a kind of research and get a phd in 6 weeks." leading to the man at the podium to say "No shenanigans at the shenanigans institute!"
