Hello and welcome to Monday, everyone! I hope it's kind to you, and if it's not, I hope you're kind to yourself.

Dear @greatdismal.bsky.social: I'd like to officially (as official as one can on bsky) invite you to an event my org is cohosting with BCcampus at Internet Archive Canada's space in downtown Vancouver. You still have to pay the regular rate to get in, but I think you'd like the people who show up.

I looked at the timeline, and -LO & BEHOLD- there it was, visible from 2014 to 2016. I think this is pretty cool, and that's all! Sometimes we can forget due hype and DiScOuRsE talking about the great villainy that technology enables, that we can also do cool things w/it. Anyhow, thx 4 reading.

And so, lo and behold, THIS STOOP. But the thing is, obviously, the art isn't there. Unsurprising. Buuuut, google street view does provide past versions of a photo! So. I knew from my metadata that it'd have been there in Sep of 2014, and Fons' showed that it was there at least as late as Mar 2016.

So I looked at the other photos I'd taken, and they all had timestamps. The one below, in fact, I'd taken 5 minutes before. So I took this and did a reverse image search on google, which (very luckily) identified the bldg on the left as a former orphanage: amsterdamopdekaart.nl/1850-1940/Pr...

Oh my gosh y'all so let me tell you the fun of digital sleuthing. This is a photo I took in #Amsterdam, alllll the way back in September of 2014. It's one of a bunch from 3-4 month trip I did across North America and Europe shortly after getting out of the Navy.

Anyhow, if you're subject to the same "ugh" of Vancouver's fall/winter, reach out and let me know. I'll feed you, and all it'll cost you is a trip out to New West.
text reads: Date: Friday, 16 October 2026

Time: 6p-9p

Theme: Pumpkin bumpkins! Soup, seeds, spice — no matter what form it comes in, people just loaf pumpkins, so I’m gonna make something pumpkin based. If you don’ t like pumpkins, then you can GFY (go Gourd-Free & Yummy) by bringing a side dish.

My personal favorite is probably November 14, because it really lets me lean into my desire to write flavor text.
text reads: Date: Saturday, 14 November 2026

Time:3p-6p

Theme: Saturday? More like CATURDAY! that’s right, we’re gonna catch and roast a stray cat. 🐈‍⬛

No no I kid. Who has that kind of time? Instead, I was thinking that we could eat things that cats eat, but that people also eat! Tuna melts? Things containing heavy cream? Grass/grains? I’m also open to suggestions, and there are a lot of different kinds of cats out there.

Tigers, for example, eat people.

I've decided to host open door dinners every other Friday from now through January to deal with the general Vancouver antisociality combined with the harshness of winter. Which was a great excuse to come up with 12 themes:
A list of 12 themes for dinner parties. It includes such highlights as "pumpkin bumpkins" on October 16, "Holly Jolly Hanukkah" on December 11, and "fun fake january holidays" on Jan 15.

Assuming you're the right @ellenbw.bsky.social to tag about this, this was EXCEPTIONAL. Fadimatu is a saint of unwilling patience, and Olivier is my heart, and Cal, oh bless, and Bede is definitely a lesson to be learned.

In the top right corner is a watercolor and colored pencil drawing of a mallard in a suit that says "don't forget to be as awesome as a duck in a suit" signed by Bethany Webb. In the top left corner is a postcard with a drawing signed by Alexis Nicole Nelson depicting a frog riding a bluebird which is carrying a basket of plant material. Huh, turns out I must be a librarian because I'm creating a taxonomy for fun on a Sunday morning. (works of public art if you were curious) anyway have some art from when I was in Berlin in 2014
Photo taken across a canal in Berlin. The image contains multi-story buildings in the background with trees and other greenery in front of them; below them is the wall of a canal. Probably most prominent in this photo is a three story mural, in white paint, of a gender ambiguoous person looking askance at the viewer with just the hint of a smile. Also lots of other marks of graffiti.

Hey! I saw you asked a question during the session but it didn't get answered, and just wanted to get you one because it was a good one. For sake of word limit, screenshot with alt-text containing the whole thing, with answer to follow. Hope that's okay!
Can't critique of AI live in the space between abstinence (or what you call refusal) and harm reduction? I think these can be more overlapping than binary choices, as use or intentional non-use is so context-dependent. Further, refusal does not always mean shaming users.

Peter Musser @petermusser.com · 19/11/2025
Local (separate from individual, which are also important) actions have the potential to inspire broader action, esp. among institutions. So: -Demand better options/behavior from our vendors -Judicious vs. regular AI use -Host communities of learning -Host local models -Seek community input!
What does it mean to focus on the local and contextual when AI–in its impacts largely operating at global scales? I feel like this also ties into Peter’s comments about harm reduction versus refusal as frameworks, which also seems to deal with a tension between local and global.

A: To be fair, libraries have a strong track record of coexisting and even using our ostensible replacements (google and search, e-books and print media, wikipedia and reference questions, zoom and public meeting spaces), so *existentially* I'm not nervous. Not about THAT, anyhow. But/And...
Question text: The use of AI seems to occur where other social structures have failed–e.g., formal educational infrastructures–which is exactly where libraries have traditionally come in while also serve as a social space. So we can see AI as coming to replace many important functions of libraries. In that light, how do libraries co-exist with something that seeks to replace them, and displace the physical spaces that libraries provide?

While being very conscientious about who I'm giving time to at #WebSummitVancouver has left my dignity intact, the same cannot be said for my glasses. Somehow this is the fault of artificial intelligence, and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.
A photo of a hand holding a pair of glasses, from which the left armature has broken off and are being held awkwardly next to them.
