It would seem from non-inclusion of important foundational biogenic reef species that "trade-offs" means accepting complete loss of these sensitive but ecologically important species. The conclusion that such impacted seas would still represent good status is a typical example of #ShiftingBaselines
000
Peter JS Jones @peterjsjones.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
Is this omission not #ShiftingBaselines by research design? A sensitive habitat could be deemed to be at good status even if all the more sensitive but ecologically important foundational biogenic reefs had been completely destroyed by fishing? Good status defined from a fisheries perspective?

How can this research support an ecosystem based approach when it omits sensitive & ecologically important biogenic reef species? "Our assessment does not include the impacts of bottom trawling on more sensitive biogenic habitats and hard bottoms (e.g., mussel beds) or Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems"

"In fact, the net production of oxygen in the ocean is close to 0". The latter statement the ocean is responsible for 50% of primary production is correct but most of the co-produced oxygen is respired by marine fauna, due to inverted pyramid of biomass in marine ecosystems (fauna outweighs flora)
