The moon tonight.
The moon continues to wane, slightly less than half of it is left. The terminator between the lit and unlit parts runs slightly left of the middle of the disk.

NGC 6939 (upper left) and NGC 6946 (lower right). 600*30s. #astrophotography #astrofotografie #astronomy #Seestar #S50Pro
The night sky filled with many stars and two main objects. NGC 6939 is an open star cluster - a cloud of hundreds to thousands of stars showing prominently against the background. NGC 6946 is a spiral galaxy. We see it from right above and so the spiral structure shows perfectly.

The moon tonight.
Now already a third of the moon has vanished in the shadows, its right side is hidden. The many craters of the region right of the center are now shown in maximum contrast.

The moon today.
The waning moon in front of the black sky. Every day now, the shadow moves a bit further from the right rim, eating into the disk.

The moon today.
The moon now clearly starts to wane. Some of the craters at the right rim have vanished into the darkness already.

IC5146 the Cocoon Nebula. #astrofotografie #astrophotography #S50Pro
The cocoon nebula is a small structure in strong red on the background of the dark sky filled with many stars. It has small dark regions cutting across it. Around the nebula and downwards of it, there are regions with much fewer stars hinting at dust blocking the light.

The moon tonight. #astrophotographie #astrophotography #moon
One day after the full moon, the disk is still pretty much a circle. But it is quite noticeable how the craters at the right side have gained in contrast as the sunlight hits them at a lower angle.

NGC6992 the eastern veil nebula. #Astrofotografie #astrophotography #Seestar #S50Pro
Another part of the famous veil nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It is a large band of bright red and blue strands intertwining and flowing through the space. Not a compact and dense nebula, but rather like lots of fathoms winding through space or a veil, giving the nebula its name.

The moon today - its the full moon!
At the time of the full moon the whole moon is lit in bright sunlight. While this shows the full disk, the contrast are lowest, as the sunlight comes exactly from the same direction as we look towards the moon.

About 20 hours left to the point of the full moon. The moon is now fully illuminated, only the leftmost craters show deeper shadows.

The moon today.
About 40 hours left to the full moon, it is almost completely illuminated. Only at the left rim it is not perfectly circular and the craters show some more shadows than the rest of the moon.

M101 the Pinwheel Galaxy. #M101 #Astrophotography #S50Pro
M101 is a spiral galaxy. We look at it from exactly "above", so we can see its gorgeous spiral structure. From a bright center core, five spiral arms extend into space, wrapping in the famous spiral geometry around the core.

The moon today.
As the full moon is only three days away, most of the moon is lit. As a consequence, most craters are less pronounced, the contrast from the shadows is missing.

The moon tonight. What was shown as the "golden handle" yesterday, which stuck out of the dark is now just the rim of a crater which is fully illuminated.
The moon on the black sky of the night. The disk is now mostly lit, the full moon is coming soon.

The moon - today it shows the "golden handle".
The two thirds lit moon in front of the black sky. Today is the special day where a crater on the north-west corner of the lit region is half-lit by the sunlight. The rim is brightly lit, the floor still completely black, creating the illusion of a handle sticke out from the moon.

The elephant trunk nebula in the constellation of Cepheus. #Astrophotography #S50Pro
The elephant trunk nebula in the constellation of Cepheus. The elephant trunk nebula is an elongated and meandering structure in front of a gas nebula which glows in red and blue hues. It has a black part of interstellar dust and some bright accents where the glowing gas seems to be more dense. It has roughly the for of an elephants trunk, giving this structure its name.

The crescent nebula NGC6888 in Cygnus.
An emission nebula, dominated by shades of blue and red coming from the emissions of oxygen and hydrogen, excited by the star the gas was eject from It has a roughly elliptical shape with one side being brighter, forming a crescent. The gas in the nebula has a lot of fine structure. The region of the nebula is surrounded by fainter gas clouds.

The western veil nebula NGC6960.
The veil nebula is a huge region of interstellar gas in the constellation swan. It is especial, as these are not diffuse clouds but long strands of colorful glowing gas which meanders through space. Also especial is the clear contrast between the cyan-blue oxygene strands and the separated strands dominated by hydrogen, glowing in a deep red.

NGC7000 or as I call it, the Mexico nebula.
A spectacular gas nebula shining in bright colors. The blue hues are caused by oxygen, the red and orange hues by sulfur and hydrogen emissions. It is shaped as the map of middle and north America, with Mexico pretty much in the center of the image.

Something beautiful at the end of the day, the pillars of creation. A region where new stars a born from interstellar gas clouds. A magnification of the picture of M16.
In the center a structure can be detected, looking like three pillars or a three-fingered hand raised upwards. This structure is known from a very iconic Hubble telescope picture.

The M16 emission nebula, called the "Eagle Nebula" in the constellation Serpens.
A fiery red nebula in front of the black back ground of space and a lot of stars. It looks a little bit like an eagle spreading its wings, hence its name. The red color comes from the emissions of hydrogen, the core is brighter an more white as the blues from oxygen are contributing to the color. In its center the fameous "pillars of creation" can be found, a region of star creation.

M57 in the constellation Lyra, a planetary emission nebula. It is about 1 light year in diameter and 2500 light years in distance.
A tiny colorful donut in front of the black of space, filled with a lot of dotlike stars. The nebula was created when a star ejected its outer gas hull. It still excites the gas, causing it to glow in bright colors. While such nebulas are not uncommon, this stands out because it is almost perfectly round, giving it its donut shape.

The moon this morning. It is now the early morning hours rather than the late night hours, where it is the perfect time to catch the moon.

The Andromeda galaxy - M31.
The image shows a close-up of the Andromeda galaxy. It is a huge disk of stars on the background of the dark sky and the stars of our own galaxy. It stretches across the whole image from the lower left to the upper right. On the left, M110 and on the right, close to M31, M32 can be seen, which are accompanying M31.

M27, the "dumbbell nebula". It is an emission gas nebula.
The image is mostly the black sky of the night, filled with many stars. In the center there is the colorful emission nebula. The colors are created by the light emissions of hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur gas in space, excited by a nearby star.

The moon late last night.
One day after the full moon, the moon started to wane. While the disk is still almost perfectly round, the craters at the right side are gaining in contrast as the angle of the sunlight shining on them declines.

The moon tonight is the full moon. And on top of that, we are getting a lunar eclipse later this night, which also marks the exakt time of peak full moon, as the moon is precisely behind the earth.
At the night of the full moon, we get to see the whole disk of the moon. As the sky is a little bit hazy, in post processing we get to see far more contrast details than usually at this time.

The moon tonight.
Approaching the full moon, most of the moon is lit now. This gives a good view of it, but also means, that the craters are losing a bit of contrast, as the light shines on them more vertical. Stepping outside, the moon is now bright enough to light the landscape.

The moon is almost covering the disk of the sun. As it was shot from southern Germany, we didn't get to see the total eclipse. But at least, 90% of the sun was covered by the moon, leaving only a thin sickle.
