Of everything just announced at #MetaConnect, I’m most excited about the new VR Glasses; I still believe in VR, and I’ve been waiting for the technology to make it more practical — and these look like a big step towards that. about.fb.com/news/2026/09...

I missed most of the “10% chance that AI will kill us all” discourse (thankfully), but a core principle of scientific skepticism is that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence; I’ve yet to see any evidence presented, and in it’s absence I’d question who is making that claim, and why.

I don’t know what to say to folks who doubt the usefulness of these tools. There’s a reason companies are going bananas to build out more infrastructure — we are just at the start of the deployment curve, and those using them are acutely aware of the value. Today’s scale of use will look downright Lilliputian in a decade.

But the only way to understand their power is to use them (and stop reading hot takes on social media).

It’s probably not your ideological thing, or mine. It’s about object-level claims about how data centers impact the communities where they’re built, many of which are wrong.

What if AI doesn’t make creativity less valuable, but exposes how much we've confused artistic value with rarity, mastery with meaning—and being special with actually mattering? There is something strange about the current anxiety over AI making music, and I think the easiest way to see it is to act

Fahrenheit 451 or Rainbows End? AI, books, and copyright law
One of my favourite science fiction novels is 'Rainbows End' by Vernor Vinge. The year is 2025 (yes, seriously), and the world is a mixture of the familiar and the bizarre. Advances in medicine allow older people to become mobile and youthful again, but these newly young old people are unprepared for the world in which they awaken, full of digital wonders and wearable tech, particularly augmented reality, which is everywhere.

OpenAI wins first battle in ongoing Indian copyright lawsuit
A fascinating ruling from the High Court of Delhi in India regarding the very high-profile case of ANI Media v OpenAI (decision here). Asian News International (ANI) is one of India's largest news agencies, which supplies text and video syndication to broadcasters and publishers across South Asia. They sued OpenAI alleging copyright infringement during the training phase, as well as reproduction of its articles on the output phase.

Why does AI in science fiction so often miss the mark?
A few days ago there was an interesting post by Andrew Curran that got a lot of responses which was discussing why AI in science fiction often does not have the capabilities that AI already has in reality. I thoroughly agree with that take, but I think that there is much more going on in why AI in science fiction often feels wrong, and I think that it has to do with the reasons why we have artificial intelligence in media in the first place.
