S Ashley & W Washington under a blue sky
Street corner in downtown Ann Arbor on a sunny autumn afternoon, under a deep, cloudless blue sky. A three-story red brick building with a flat, bracketed cornice stands at the intersection, its upper floors lined with tall arched windows. A red metal fire escape climbs the left side. At street level, an orange-trimmed storefront with arched glass panes wraps the corner, with red patio umbrellas and café tables on the sidewalk to the left. Next door, a slightly newer brick building has a dark green awning and a hanging sign reading "Grizzly Peak," with black umbrellas outside. Cars are parked along the curb, including a white Camaro and a dark sedan. On the far left, a pedestrian in a green jacket with a backpack crosses the street. Newer, modern apartment buildings, one with a curved silver facade, sit in the background. The shadow of a lamppost falls across the foreground crosswalk.

In the best case, the plants benefit from partial shade and the panels generate slightly more electricity due to the evaporative cooling from the plants below. (I worked on Python code for those models but not the actual modeling of the system)

JFK under a blue sky
Taking off from JFK — the Delta wing and engine in the foreground, the airport spread below in the afternoon light.

The full expanse of JFK’s terminal complex is visible — the solar panel arrays on the terminal rooftops catching the sun, the ATC tower rising center frame, gates bristling with aircraft including several Delta tails visible at the lower right. The new Terminal 6 construction or recent additions visible in the mix. An Emirates wide-body at a gate on the far right. Ground equipment, cargo pallets stacked in yellow-orange towers in the lower left.

Beyond the airport perimeter, the flat Queens/Jamaica landscape stretches to the horizon — low-rise suburban density, patches of green, the hazy blue sky of a June afternoon in New York.

Campania under a blue sky
The foreground is a blur of speed — hedgerows, wildflowers, and scrub rushing past the window. Beyond, a broad valley floor is filled with intensely green vineyards and mixed cultivation, the vines lush and full in early June. A small town spreads along the valley floor with white and terracotta buildings scattered among the trees.

Then the mountains rise — rounded, densely forested summits in deep green, almost velvety, filling the middle and upper frame. These are the Apennines of Campania, specifically the Sannio or Matese ranges in this stretch between Benevento and Caserta.

Dramatic cumulus clouds build over the summits against a deep blue sky — classic afternoon convective weather developing over the mountains. The light is extraordinary, catching the hillsides at an angle that makes the green almost luminous.

This is Campania Felix — the fertile Campanian plain meeting the Apennines, one of the most agriculturally productive landscapes in Italy since Roman times.

alberobello trulli under a blue sky
A row of trulli in full Alberobello sunshine — now converted into shops, as most of the centro storico trulli are.

The conical dry-stone roofs are the star — grey limestone slabs (chiancarelle) laid in concentric rings tapering to a pinnacle, each topped with a white-painted decorative finial. The symbols are clearly visible on several cones: a stylized cross on the leftmost, a crescent moon on the central one, and a serpent form on the one to its right, a mix of Christian, astrological, and apotropaic symbols.

A grapevine has been trained up and over the front of the middle trullo, its branches spread wide across the facade in a pergola-like canopy of fresh green leaves — a lovely detail that softens the tourist-shop atmosphere considerably.

The whitewashed walls are immaculate. Shops occupy the ground level — La Bottega di Tichetta on the right, a gift shop in the center with ceramics and textiles displayed in the windows, a dress hanging in the doorway. Cobblestone piazza in the foreground, deep blue sky above.

Touristy but genuinely extraordinary. There really is nothing else that looks like this anywhere.

red light under a blue sky in salento
A low-angle shot from the driver's seat at a red light on a quiet provincial road in Puglia.

The yellow traffic signal arms are characteristic of Italian road infrastructure — that particular shade of yellow-gold is very distinctively Italian. Two red lights are visible, one overhead and one on the right-hand pole.

The road ahead is a flat two-lane provincial highway disappearing into the distance — the Salento flatness is very apparent, the horizon almost perfectly level. Blue directional signs in the distance point toward **Brindisi** and **Lecce**.

The vegetation tells the story of where the photo was taken: prickly pear cactus (fichi d'India) in the scrubby verge on the left, palm trees on the right behind a low stone wall, dry yellowed grass. Classic Salento roadside landscape — arid, flat, slightly scrubby, under an enormous blue sky with high cirrus clouds and a contrail crossing the frame diagonally.

A mundane moment made photogenic by the wide sky and the light.

Helsinki Cathedral under a blue sky
The cathedral sits on Senate Square, elevated on its granite steps, which gives it that imposing presence even from street level. The neoclassical design by Carl Ludwig Engel is unmistakable — white stucco facade, Corinthian colonnades on all four porticos, and the five green copper domes (the large central one flanked by four smaller ones), each topped with a gold cross. The roofline statues of the twelve apostles are visible in images 2 and 3. Image 1 gives a good sense of the urban context — the square below, e-scooters and tour buses included. Images 2 and 3 are shot from the base of the steps looking up, which exaggerates the perspective nicely and makes the columns feel monumental.

ALT by Claude Looking back toward the entrance from the nave. The dominant feature is the ornate pipe organ in the gallery — a striking contrast to the otherwise restrained neoclassical interior. The organ case is richly decorated with gilded woodwork in red and gold, very Baroque in character against the spare gray walls. The oculus skylight above floods the dome with natural light. The wooden pews, burgundy carpet runner, and chandelier complete a space that feels austere but not cold.

North Campus Diag under a partly cloudy blue sky
This is a photo taken from an elevated vantage point on the University of Michigan’s North Campus in Ann Arbor. The dominant feature is the Lurie Tower (also known as the Baits Carillon), a striking brutalist brick bell tower that rises prominently against a partly cloudy blue sky.

In the background to the left, you can see the Duderstadt Center with its distinctive glass pyramid skylights. To the right is the Walgreen Drama Center. The walkways below wind through a landscaped plaza with young trees just beginning to show early signs of spring — bare branches, patchy green grass, and a few students moving across the paths.

The overall feel is a crisp, late-winter/early-spring day, with that characteristic flat Michigan light.

post you from a different era college professor, 1983

This is a black and white photograph showing a suburban residential scene from the 1980s based on the cars and architectural style.

The image features a two-story colonial-style house with white siding and black shutters. The house has a distinctive gambrel roof design on an attached garage section on the left side. Yours truly in light-colored clothing stands in the driveway between two period cars - American-made sedans from that era.

The property appears newly developed, with sparse, recently planted landscaping including some small shrubs near the house foundation and a young tree on the right side. The lawn looks freshly seeded or laid, and there's a lawn spreader or similar equipment visible on the grass in the foreground right.

In the background, you can see other houses under construction or recently completed, suggesting this is a new subdivision development. The overall composition captures that classic American suburban expansion moment, documenting a family's new home in a growing neighborhood.

thanks! i just point and shoot — sand, lake, and sky do the heavy lifting. check out this one, that i took an hour ago. it's shutterbug heaven up here — impossible to take a bad shot!
This is a beautifully serene beach scene captured during sunset. The composition features:

Foreground: A sandy beach with scattered rocks and driftwood along the shoreline. A small boat rowboat rests on the sand near the water's edge.

Main Elements: On the left side, a striking silhouette of a pine tree frames the scene, with the sun glowing brilliantly through its branches, creating a natural focal point.

Water: The calm waters of Marquette Bay display gorgeous gradient colors ranging from golden orange near the horizon to soft blue-gray in the upper portions. The water's surface is remarkably smooth and reflective.

Sky: A peaceful gradient transitions from warm golden and orange tones near the horizon to cooler blue hues above, characteristic of golden hour lighting.

Background: A distant shoreline or island is visible as a dark silhouette along the horizon line.

The overall mood is tranquil and contemplative, with excellent use of natural light creating a warm, peaceful atmosphere. The photograph demonstrates nice composition with the tree providing natural framing and the leading line of the beach drawing the eye toward the glowing sun.

lake superior under a blue sky
This is a beautiful, serene beach scene featuring a pristine sandy shoreline meeting calm ocean waters under a stunning gradient sky. The sand appears light beige or tan with some texture and footprints visible on its surface. The ocean is relatively still with gentle ripples, displaying a deep blue-gray color that suggests either early morning or late afternoon light.

The most striking feature is the sky, which transitions smoothly from a rich, deep navy blue at the top to lighter shades of blue and eventually to a pale turquoise or light blue near the horizon. This beautiful gradient creates a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. The horizon line is clear and straight, dividing the composition roughly in the middle between sky and water.

The overall impression is one of tranquility and natural beauty, with the calm conditions suggesting a peaceful moment at the beach. The lack of waves or disturbance in the water, combined with the clear sky, indicates favorable weather conditions and creates a sense of serenity.

blue sky over the argo dam
This photo shows a beautiful river scene on a bright, clear day with a brilliant blue sky dotted with white puffy clouds. The main feature is a railroad bridge crossing the water, supported by concrete pillars. What's particularly interesting is a line of bright orange or red buoys floating in the water, creating a path or marker system across the river.

On the right side of the image, there's a pedestrian walkway with orange railings that extends out over the water, allowing people to get closer to the river. The shoreline is landscaped with rocks and grass areas.

The water is calm and reflective, mirroring both the sky and the surrounding trees. Dense, lush green trees line both sides of the river, creating a natural corridor. You can see some utility poles and power lines in the background, indicating this is in a developed area.

The lighting is excellent, suggesting this was taken on a perfect summer day. The contrast between the deep blue water, bright orange buoys, green vegetation, and blue sky creates a very vibrant and appealing scene. This looks like a recreational area where people come to enjoy the waterway, possibly for boating, fishing, or just sightseeing.

later that day overlooking the huron river and argo livery
This photo shows a peaceful river scene with remarkably still, mirror-like water that perfectly reflects the cloudy sky above. The water surface is so calm that it creates an almost perfect [not really] reflection of the white and gray clouds scattered across the blue sky.

Along the far shore, there's a dense line of mature trees creating a lush, green canopy. You can see a boat dock area nestled among the trees, with several boats visible. On the right side of the image, there's a concrete bridge or overpass structure spanning across the water.

The sky dominates much of the composition, filled with puffy white and gray clouds against patches of blue sky. The lighting suggests this was taken during the day, possibly in late morning or afternoon, when the light creates this beautiful interplay between sky and water.

The overall scene has a very tranquil, serene quality - the kind of peaceful waterway you might find in many parts of the Midwest or other regions with rivers and lakes. The stillness of the water and the perfect reflections create an almost symmetrical composition that's quite striking.

big sky with a patch of blue over the amtrak station and the nearly complete broadway park
This photo shows a panoramic view taken from the Broadway bridge looking out over the Amtrak station and Broadway park. The scene is dominated by a dramatic, overcast sky filled with gray and white clouds, with just a small patch of blue sky visible in the upper portion of the image.

Below, the landscape shows a mix of residential areas with houses nestled among trees, and a large construction site with various vehicles parked throughout. There's a modern building with a distinctive flat roof visible in the middle distance, and you can see some infrastructure including what looks like a bridge or overpass structure in the foreground.

The terrain is relatively flat with dense tree coverage throughout the residential areas, giving the community a well-established, leafy appearance. The parking area or construction site on the right side of the image suggests some kind of development or commercial activity taking place.

The lighting suggests this was taken during the day, but the heavy cloud cover creates a moody, somewhat dramatic atmosphere. The wide-angle perspective captures the expansive feeling of the landscape and the impressive scale of the cloudy sky above.

Burton Tower under a blue sky (but it won't be blue for long: as you can see, art fair is upon us)
This photo captures a scene in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan, featuring the iconic Burton Memorial Tower in the background. The tower, part of the University of Michigan campus, stands tall behind a group of white vendor tents that are set up for the Ann Arbor Art Fair.

In the foreground are several closed, peaked white tents arranged in a row, set up on a blocked-off street. Trees with lush green foliage partially obscure the base of the tower, and a mostly cloudy sky with a patch of blue peeking through fills the top of the image. To the right, a person stands near a black van, suggesting early setup or preparation for the event.

forty-second street looking east from fifth avenue under a blue sky with wispy clouds
This is a classic Manhattan street scene showcasing the dramatic urban canyon effect created by New York’s towering skyscrapers. The photo captures the beautiful contrast between the city’s architectural eras - you can see older pre-war buildings with their classic brick and stone facades alongside sleek modern glass towers that reflect the brilliant blue sky.

The perspective from street level really emphasizes the scale and density of Manhattan’s built environment. The wide avenue stretches into the distance, flanked by these architectural giants that seem to reach endlessly upward. You can see pedestrians crossing at the crosswalk, giving a sense of the human scale against these massive structures.

The lighting is particularly striking - the sun appears to be hitting one of the glass buildings, creating that bright glare, while the deep blue sky with white clouds provides a stunning backdrop. The street appears to be relatively quiet for Manhattan, which might suggest this was taken on a weekend or during a less busy time of day.

This type of view is quintessentially New York - the interplay of old and new architecture, the urban canyon effect, and the way the city’s grid system creates these dramatic sight lines down the avenues. It’s the kind of scene that captures why Manhattan’s streetscape is so iconic and instantly recognizable around the world.
