"Out of Focus" The aftermath of a weekend-induced moment of questionable judgment, on a sunny Saturday morning.
A sunny morning in the countryside.
With an apparently abandoned silver-gray Ford Focus, inconvenienty parked in a roadside ditch.

1. For #Caturday, let me introduce you to Leo, my late mother's loving, sweet, skittish, blue-eyed, cross-eyed, wonky-eared, mixed cuddle bug #ca that she found as a feral kitten & adopted. I need to find him a good Houston home w/o dogs & preferably where he'll be pampered as a sole 😺. 1/2 #Cats

Pro tip: if you insist on leaving your Sony G lens in nature after you've used it, at least leave the lens caps on! 🤣

Projected onto a camera sensor, the sun is a disc of a millimeter or thereabouts. If that can make a dried leaf catch fire, do you want to get that energy on your sensor? (hint: no). And the heat building up in your lens is no fun either. Many lenses have resin aperture blades. You can melt resin.

peter (ph neutral) @peter-18c39.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
1. Yes. 2. Yup. It's called "heat". 😁 If you use a magnifying glass, or your uncle's reading glasses, to focus the sun's light on a small area of a sheet of paper (or a dry leaf), it'll catch fire in a few moments. Camera lenses are very good at that too. 1/2

The Baader ND-5 designation foil is effectively a 16.6 stop filter. Contrary to most ND filters, it blocks the IR and UV light as well, and that would fry your sensor and melt your aperture blades just as well as the visible light. 2/2

🤣 The only thing on these photos that doesn't show up as pitch-black is the sun. Sony MADE a 70-400, for the A-mount. An excellent G-lens, which I snapped up for a fraction of what you'd pay for its successor for the E-mount. 1/2

That took a bit more time, partly because of the eclipse and the Perseïds invasion. The disorienting bit is probably due to the fact that you went through two distinct periods, one in which she was the mother who loved you and took care of you, and one in which she became dependent and obnoxious?

You've got more going on than I have. And yet, here's you trying to strut me. Let's just strut each other then. In that sense, you're doing a stellar job. Now allow me to reciprocate, ok? Objection allowed, but don't push your luck.

I'm okay. Everyone worries about me including Janny. Which she shouldn't do. I may not be very resilient emotionally, but beneath that layer, nobody gets to kill me. 😎

We have some stellar neighbours. Ours is apparently one of the most socially engaging streets in the village... everyone talks about the social cohesion in our block. Just two days ago, I started to reel in another brand-new neighbour. It seems to be working. 😎

Things seem to be settling down again. My beloved spent her first 24 hours in two weeks on only 10mg of morphine. She's in good spirits. I admit to having taken a nap in the afternoon while she was in the company of a friend, so I'm trying to find my bearings as well.

I have seen many of your photos, and I have seen your affection for art nouveau and art deco, which took off like a rocket ship in American architecture. So, somehow, I am not amazed at all! It helps that you pay good attention to symmetry. 🤩

Following up on this, I wrote a blog post to explain to regular non-nerd users how you can easily flag an email as unsafe (phishing or otherwise malicious). You can read it here: peterhuppertz.net/english/is-t... Feel free to share this if you think it's useful.

The situation is unbearable for both of you. And no matter what she might have been like in the past, both of you do not deserve this. What a dingy way to die. And what a horrible memory to have lived through. I wish I could say something useful, but I can't think of anything.

My neighbour had his Paypal account hacked via phishing, to the tune of €500. I sleuthed a bit, reported the offending email with all relevant details, and raised a dispute, containing all information. This morning, my neighbour told me that Paypal reversed the transaction. I admit it: I'm proud. 😎

90 mins later, she was down with heavy chest pain, a fading pulse and a fading look in the eye, while I was praying for the ambulance to arrive. It was a close call, but the paramedics did a splendid job. And the surgeon in hospital *nailed* the medication problem.

The ambiguity was because this is about you, not about me. Feel free to ask -- the management summary is that Janny has an ailment that is the result of an underlying condition. The ailment resulted in insufferable pain for which she got the wrong type of morfine 1/2

No, I'm still here, occasionally, although I do fly under the radar most of the time. Things are hectic here. Some nerd stuff, and the occasional medical mishap, one of them resulting in a 911 call and an ambulance chase. But we're all alive. although my beloved won't be doing much kicking soon.
