Brilliant sun illuminates the inner enclosure at Bury Down hillfort, Lanreath. On its hill's western crest, we look over the land towards the River Fowey, and the much later estate of Boconnoc with its dark woods. Fast approaching is a front of rain and winds, including lightning. Time to go.

Roadside respite on Penally's steep hill, nr Boscastle. Beautiful water trough for horses & dogs; the shute's hexagonal spout at a height convenient for pails. Displays the local geology: granite trough, quartz jambs and grey slate for everything else. The strong arch earlier, reused? Photo 2006

Two days in the Walkham valley on Dartmoor in the company of farmers and commoners interested in the history of their 'ancient semi-natural grasslands'. A prehistoric pastoral landscape with woods and trees jumping their historic confines to re-colonise stony slopes. Great photo (c) Chris Chapman.

I want people to understand the full impact of the devastation that First Nations in Canada are facing. It's NOT just that people and wildlife are losing their homes...it's the history that is being lost for generations to come.

#Dartmoor ponies drink, and cool their feet, in Goad's Stone Pool in Walkhampton. One of the numerous 'sacred pools' suggested by Tom Greeves, it has two low stone rows passing close to its left hand side.

Coloured copy of a pencil drawing of the backyards behind three storey brick buildings. There are a number of small outbuildings in the yards. To the left is a pale building that stands out as the walls are made of pale stone masonry. Pencil drawing of the backs of three storey buildings with small outbuildings in the yards.

A horse gin in Kent. With its own little house made of reused timber, possibly from the nearby 13th century house that was rebuilt at about the same time as the horse gin was installed to raise water from a well. #ArchitecturalIllustration #pencil #drawing #ArtShare
A horse engine or gin. It consists of a drum to which is fixed a rope that is turned by a beam that was attached to a horse via a harness. The horse used to wind the rope by walking in a circle on a paved path. The apparatus is built under a thatched roof made with timbers reused from older structures.

Number 85-89 Micklegate, York. Built by Holy Trinity Priory in the l 15th-e 16th century on the edge of the Priory precinct they doubtless provided rental income which seems never to have been wealthy. From the mid 18th century-mid 19th century all 3 tenements were occupied by butchers. #ArtShare

A little bear figurine carved out of amber some 6,000 years ago 🐻❤️ A hole runs through the bear’s torso suggesting it was threaded on a cord, perhaps worn or carried as a protective charm. Found in a peat bog near Słupsk, Poland, in 1887. 📷 National Museum in Szczecin #FindsFriday #Archaeology
Photo by G. Solecki/A. Piętak of a small figurine of a bear carved out of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange. The display lighting makes it glow in places. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear’s torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2

It was discovered in Słupsk during peat mining in 1887.

According to the museum catalogue ‘’Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished”.

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was ‘Słupcio’,
