I went back to the Oxford Tolkien Society (Taruithorn) a couple of years ago to lead a singing evening and this is one we did - still a favourite even with the students of 2024!

When I was young I could never get the tune right. However more recently Jessica from the Tokien Society gave me the sheet music (she had got it from Stephen Oliver the composer) and guitar chords. I can see why I struggled. But now the answer is yes!

As I'm in Milton Keynes I both am and am not located in Buckinghamshire depending on the definiton used. But I see that you've got events scheduled in MK so good job for picking the right one!

And the source, our one great treasure, was the well from which rose bright ceaseless waters, every measure shining with its own clear light. See apoolofsong.wordpress.com/the-well/ for the the rest including the destruction of the well of light, and the consequences. #NationalPoetryDay (2/2)

This red valley, bleak and thorny was once with trees and pastures green. In these channels, dry and tawny, shining waters once were seen: streams like falling stars cascaded to fields where pools of sun-fire glowed; moonlight mists with dews brocaded orchards through which heavens flowed. (1/2)

1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20
Photograph of Pevensey Castle with an information board in the foreground showing an artists impression of how the view may have looked in 1066 when the sea came almost up to the walls.

It's very unlike his other stuff but it does have something about it as a book. Completely agree we could do without it being put into practice, though.

The Flight of the Heron by D.K.Broster, a 1920s historical novel set during the 1745 Jacobite rebellion featuring two chivalrous enemies fated to keep meeting and to have one of the most intense bromances in all literature.

I have been reading the Anne McCaffrey Pern novels for the first time yeah I don't know why I hadn't read them before and I don't know why I'm inhaling them so fast now BUT importantly I know they're not trying to actually do linguistic worldbuilding but BOY do I have linguistics thoughts anyway

We'd like your help with something. The one hundredth anniversary of Ursula's birth will take place in 2029. This may seem a long time away, but we’re already starting to think about how to celebrate Ursula’s life and art. We’d love to add your ideas to the mix—there's a brief survey here:

It's Friday. I wrote a poem about the spiders who are trying to kill me.
Poem and art. A poem titled, "Ambition" with a black and white drawing of something that might be a spider. The poem begins on the left side of the page, has one line in the middle of the page, and then continues on the right side of the page. The drawing of the spider is on the bottom right.

The text of the poem reads:

"The spiders here are bold.
They stretch their thin lines
all the way across the sidewalk,
from fence to wall,
hoping, I think, to clothesline me,
knock me to the ground,
then rush out to secure me
before I struggle to my feet.
Perhaps they dream of
dragging me into their halls,
to feast like Vikings
at the never-emptied table,
hosting foes and granting rings
and singing songs of victory
about my death."

 It has not worked yet.

Every time
I walk on through their traps,
hardly even pausing in my stride
to let them think they had a chance.
I am a hammer
to their nets and hopes,
inconsiderate and blunt.
And yet, despair does not claim them.
They are persistent hunters,
for every time I take another lap,
and come again into the space
that runs between
the fencing and wall,
I have to wipe away a brand new snare
that some ambitious spider
spun across my path
in futile hopes of glory.

One day, bold friend,
you might be king among the spiders
and fete your shield-kin on my heart.
But not today."

The drawing of the spider is a black and white ink-pen drawing, made of abstract shapes and lines. The spider appears to have wavy hair, which is a little concerning, and deformed pincers. This is not an accurate rendering of a spider, but don't tell it that. It has skeptical eyes.

I use Reaper which seems to do everything anyone might want, I use about 0.1% of that for my occasional recordings. It's flexible and you can add instruments, effects etc.. I don't find it intuitive but there are lots of explainers out there and I keep notes of what I have learned to do!

Definitely ambiguous and I think it's possible that all of Odysseus's adventures between Troy and Ithaca are just hallucinations / false memories.

I wouldn't call myself a cartoonist, but I had the vision and just needed it to be on paper to the best of my ability.
A hand drawn eight panel cartoon. First two panels are a colander sitting frowning on a shelf. Then the colander is frowning straining pasta, then three more panels of frowning sitting on a shelf. Then a big panel where it's projecting a bunch of crescent eclipse shapes and smiling with speech bubbles around saying "Wow! Look! Amazing! Beautiful!" And then one final panel where it's sitting on a shelf smiling.

Horse memes for #TolkienTuesday / #TolkienTrewsday
An adult horse is telling a story to its foal: "and Snowmane bore him up like a Mearh of old, even as Nahar the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young..."Five horses are discussing the Fellowship of the Ring movie. "Great movie, great acting. Florian was awesome as Asfaloth!" "Agree, and how about Shane as Bill the Pony? So cool!" "Yeah but I can't believe they left out Fatty Lumpkin again!" "I know, right?" "What even is he? So mysterious!" "He's great but he doesn't move on the plot..."
