I didn't really get into it, but masks and blend modes become extremely powerful with G'MIC. You can blend the results of a filter in to the original image, either spatially so that the filter affects a region of the picture, or by blending into high or low values, into particular hues, etc.

I keep finding new things every time I mess around in it. I've been trying to get in the habit of keeping comprehensive output images just to remind myself what the filters do, hence the examples in this thread

For some styles, G'MIC should simply be your first port of call. If your whole project is meant to have a 90s VHS look, then you'll be putting the VHS filter on every image. Similarly for filters like ghost, Dorure Gilding, CRT phosphors, stained glass, oldschool 8bits, wiremap, and old photograph.
Ghost filter creates a supernatural black and white look.Dorure gilding filter creates a burnished metal look.Wiremap filter (works best with simpler images with central individual subjects).Old photograph filter. Sepia tone, grain, and noise.

G'MIC is very powerful and very easy to get started with. It's very useful to have in your toolkit for image adjustments. I've used the plugin for Affinity and XnView and it works great. You can follow @gmic-eu.bsky.social for tips and showcases, and download G'MIC at gmic.eu/gmic300/

G'MIC has close to a thousand filters. I left out entire categories! Here are some images I rendered completely from scratch just by hitting random parameters, using the Chirikov-Taylor filter, neon lightning filter, organic fibers filter, and spline spirograph filter.

Use masks and blend modes to combine the filtered image with the original image for more nuance. To ensure consistency you can copy-paste settings from the plug-in, or process your images as a batch from the command line.

I should note that I've been putting G'MIC through its paces by using a high-variance collage for the input. In some of the outputs, an area of the image ends up with disproportionate 'attention'. You'll almost certainly get a better result by applying filters to separate images.

Some even more chaotic mosaic effects. Try using the 'Carres Lignes' filter with the darken blend mode to bring back details. The 'little boxy things' filter has a 2000s broken computer look. The mineral mosaic filter is a personal favourite. The pack ellipses filter tiles with wobbly circles.

The oldschool 8bits filter creates a lovely pixel art effect. The ascii art filter is similarly oldschool. The weave filter turns an image into strips of basketwork. These are also forms of quantisation, creating different patterns representing the original image.

G'MIC has lots of filters for quantisation, i.e., ways to create mosaics, partition or rearrange the image, find and reinforce edges, and so on. The smoothelate, tiled form, coloured ellipses ('Ellipses Colorees'), and hexagonal grid filters transform a picture into grids of tiles.
Smoothelate filter turns the image into a patchwork of smooth-cornered squares.Tiled form filter, here using circles, turns the image into a mosaic.Coloured ellipses ['Ellipses Colorees'] filter recreates image as coloured circles on black background.Hexagonal grid filter quantises the image into hexagons.

There are some good glitch filters in G'MIC. Here are the Huffman glitch filter, shredder filter, superstreak filter, and VHS filter. Not pictured: 'Self Glitching', another fav but it doesn't work well with the collage.

There are hundreds of G'MIC filters that re-render the image in different spaces, or that warp its 2D shape. You can use them to make abstract art, futuristic settings, or display showcases. Here are the loose photos, 3D blocks, 3D elevation, and Poincaré disk filter, applied to our collage.
Loose photos effect cuts up the image.3D blocks filter gives a coarse representation of the image mapping values to heights. A lot easier than recreating the image in Minecraft.3D elevation filter (with Phong shading) creates a heightmap of the image.Geometric Poincaré disk created from the collage.

With G'MIC we can render all sorts of visual effects overlaid on an image. Here we see a filter for beautiful bokeh lights, rain & snow filter for weather particulates, drop water filter for droplets, and random waves filter for ripples. Not useful for the collage but you can see how they work.

I love experimenting with these dramatic changes to image styles. Here are three that alter and heighten the picture's colours drastically. The frequency representation filter and neon filter create high-contrast colours. The hallucinogen filter makes a weird liquid metal rainbow effect.
Frequency representation filter changes the colours to striking high-contrast bright values.Neon filter (by Joan Rake) creates vivid contrast between dark and brilliant colours.Hallucinogen filter (by Samj) creates a psychedelic 'liquid metal' effect.

We can dramatically change an image style by using G'MIC to redraw its lines in abstract ways. Here are the Stringify, black crayon graffiti, and filaments filters.

G'MIC can mimic lots of art styles. Here are some for large areas of flat colour. That includes the cartoon and comic book filters, for bright colours and strong lines. Also the vector painting filter and Cubism filter (here specifically 'Cubisme B'), for more impressionistic styles.

Some of G'MIC's filters imitate black-and-white traditional media. These can be quite striking. Here is our collage again, put through the charcoal, engrave, lineart, and pencil portrait filters. If you were doing this for real, you would fine-tune the filter parameters to get the best results.

Let's start with changes to art style. You can use G'MIC to recreate an image as if with traditional media like pens or paintbrushes. Here are the marker drawing filter, sketch filter, brushify filter, and Angoisse anguish filter.

You can unify style manually using palette, motifs, proportion, individual image adjustments, etc. But with the right G'MIC filter, you could pick out assets and not care that they're a photo, watercolour painting, and vector graphic, because the filter changes them into the same visual style.
110
Ben M | Periapt Games @periaptgames.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Some filters will work better in one part of the image than in others. Others will effectively unify all parts of the collage into a single aesthetic. That's very useful when working with stock art! You want a unified style, conferring a stronger sense of an overall project aesthetic and identity.

I whipped this up to cover different input styles: photographic, cartoon, lineart, discrete object, watercolour, stylisation, realism, areas of light and dark, areas of high and low contrast, hard and soft edges, etc.
