What nonsense that undermines our quality of life are we buying right now?

The "anonymity + armor" effect. The car acts like a mask and a shield at once, both independently lower empathy and raise aggression. Driving demands constant vigilance and quick decisions, keeping drivers in low-grade stress. People who aren't in steel cages need protection from this. #peoplecity

Protection is for when it is needed. Duh. People needs physical protection from distracted operators of heavy machinery who, countless research studies show, need to be contained and corralled for the safety of everyone else. Protected bike lanes everywhere, please. #safety #peoplecity

Most will think this was an unfortunate mistake, but what it was was a thoughtless design decision made by someone who doesn't think at all in their daily work about people who walk and bike, or what the purpose of a sidewalk even is. No civil engineering awards here.

NB has one city that feels like a city: ours. At a huge 315 km², we win by focusing, not spreading thin. #plansj declared a PDA, with this year's plan let's focus even more - more services + more life in the PDA. #peoplecity @markleger.bsky.social called it in 2013: sologi.co/2013-footprint

Saint John Transit is winning despite the province. They launched NA’s FIRST all-electric on-demand fleet - slashing wait times from 60 mins to 6. NB is the ONLY province providing $0 for transit. Equal opportunity shouldn't be about erasing density advantages. Time to fund our cities. #peoplecity

Be the parent who has to drive your kids to everything in 2026 and ask yourself if this is better or worse than when we used to walk to everything and knock on our friend's door when we wanted to hang out.

#peoplecity: "Saint John has a growing network of bike lanes and multi-use paths, including Harbour Passage and connections to the Trans Canada Trail, so an e-bike makes it easier to commute, run errands, and explore the city without a car." This election, demand growth of this important network!

Love this! It doesn't take much money or infrastructure to make our streets much safer for people. Needed: 1. Put people’s safety first. 2. Recognize drivers follow road design, not road signs. 3. Accept that faster traffic means less human activity in a neighbourhood. #peoplecity

Saint John is closer to a “one‑minute city” than we think. Union is waking up; Lansdowne already hums with daily life. The problem? We still design for cars, not people. Imagine if we flipped that script on a few key streets. #PeopleCity #SaintJohn #UptownSJ #StreetDesign #SafeStreets

While the “15-minute city” model promotes neighborhood-level urban planning, Sweden is pursuing a hyper-local twist: a scheme to redesign every street in the nation.

Agreed. Parking mandates force developers to build more parking spaces than needed, wasting land, increasing construction costs, and ultimately making housing and businesses more expensive. Ending parking mandates is good for small business.

Can cities just replace parking spots with trees? One borough of Montreal has been experimenting with quick, cheap implementations of this for greenery, shade, and water management. But there’s been controversy due to losing parking and the fact that it doesn’t look as polished as bigger projects.

Why does Saint John require a 200m buffer for shelters and tent sites, but only 150m for heavy industry? We’re saying people needing shelter are a bigger threat to our neighbourhoods’ quality of life than factories. What does that say about our priorities?
