Can someone please explain why it is that too many politicians only seem to want the votes of the prejudiced and the ignorant? To the extent that they are actively repelling anyone capable of rational thought and decency. Why the pathetic need to appease the bigot vote, at everyone else’s expense?

Please explain to me how Margaret Thatcher forcing the sale of our national assets for a fraction of their worth was acceptable. But forcing them to sell them back to us at a fraction of their worth isn't. it doesn't make any sense.

Thatcher sold off more national assets than any other country. She underpriced them, and they were sold with zero debt. The £bn's of debt private owners have loaded onto them is money extracted for their own pockets. And Labour plays at fixing this? 🤯

The cost to the UK of the richest 1% is £450bn a year. That is 200x the cost of housing asylum seekers. Double the entire benefits bill. And nearly 2.5x as much as is spent on the NHS. For just 700,000 very, very greedy people. Lets talk about this cost.

Surreal that these pieces somehow manage to not even mention the pandemic that has left many millions chronically ill
The sensemaker
Signed off sick:
The parts of Britain that are not working
The party of work must focus on the communities where long-term sickness and economic inactivity have taken hold - before more fall to Nigel Farage, says Philip Collins
name. This is a party established by workers
and the material prosperity that derive from productive work. As the pious Fabian Beatrice Webb wrote in 1893: "The existence and, I fear, the growth of this leisured class... is the gravest problem of
Yet Britain isn't working, and the Labour party is going to find it extremely difficult to live up to the virtue embodied in its name. The problem is, to use a medical term,
• More than 9 million people in the UK are classified as economically inactive - the most concerning part of this large cohort is the number of people signed
• "Economically inactive" is not a measure of unemployment.
The Labour Force Survey of
February 2025 put unemployment at 4.4%, which is too high, but much lower than the post-crisis peak of more than 8% in 2011.
Unemployment at that rate means 1.57 million people do not have
• The additional 9.22 million people classified as economically inactive make up more than
a fifth of the country's potential workforce.
Active inactive
Not all of this is alarming. More than a quarter of those classified as inactive are students and more than a tenth are retired. Neither group would exactly rejoice at being described as "inactive" - although some students might be.
There are also plenty of people caring for others. More than a quarter of all inactive women, and 6% of men, are at home or caring for elderly relatives or children, or both.
The core of the problem, then, lies somewhere else. Specifically, this is not about inactivity as such; it is about sickness. Of the 9.2 million people classed as economically inactive, 30% are signed off as sick. Soon after taking office, the Starmer government commissioned Sir Charlie Mayfield to investigate the problem.

Remember, Paris wasn’t “always this way.” Not that many years ago, Paris was choking in car traffic. And it wasn’t a safe place to ride a bike for transportation, so not many people tried. This is new. This is a result of deliberate vision, and bold leadership. Cities are a result of choices.
