it really is awesome how "unalive" is the exact language structure that Newspeak uses in 1984

I actually think that a part of this blame is Reality TV, which makes everyone do convos on speakerphone so the audience can hear both sides

Yes, it is good for the services to receive the revenue they need in exchange for a mild inconvenience of “paying to enter and then leaving to station”

Yeah and I think free buses is worse policy than “heavy discretion to the driver and a very reliable system.” I’d rather the revenue from fare go to improving the system than making an okay system free

But again unless we know that the people jumping the gates are going to work and not just jumping it because it’s fun or antisocial this is just imagination

Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 9h
This is why automated gates (or speed cameras, or other automated enforcement) are better, because it makes the enforcement actually race or income neutral

Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 11h
Minimizing fare evasion is good though, you should pay to use the very expensive-to-operate system so that it can continue to operate well

So is the issue that they just don't stay open even if other people are detected by the sensor? Will it slam closed on you?

How does the gate prevent people from leaving more than just a normal gate

Like were there people saying that spreadsheets were removing the process of arithmetic from ledgers and you should have to do manual math? Or was it just “thank god it does sums for you now”

Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
My work is trying to create an AI use policy and I’m trying really hard to find the needle between “this is a tool like excel and we wouldn’t ban that and make you do your math by hand” and “most applications are reducing process but often the process is the point”

My life is nothing like I imagined and everything I feared it would become because for 30 seconds I thought there were monsters on the world

Part of the point of checking in is them telling you “here’s your seat remember? Okay don’t bring an aresol can”. There’s value in the process!

This was like 6 months ago with Gemini workspace I guess idk like the version of Gemini you get if your company pays for it

I think that’s fair but it looks more full of holes when it does this same talking-it-out except it just makes up stuff (tried to write something in google apps script and it kept explaining the new code and then apologizing when it didn’t work)

Trump’s superpower has always been that he radiates an anti-gravitas field, such that anything he touches becomes seen as fundamentally unserious. This has allowed Trump to pursue wars, tyranny, and corruption of immense gravity, while everyone tries to avoid looking like they care too much.

Part of the point of the scene is Tony being like “how are you able to explain the scheme so clearly, this isn’t how we talk”

They did two huge post-release edits immediately! (bill of rights and 12th amendment)

I don’t disagree but I think there’s a real monkeys paw opportunity here of “accidentally bringing back public executions and the corrosiveness to the soul that comes with it”

Arguably the best of the series

It’s no fun when the bad guy has invincibility and the best powers and it takes no effort to use them and and and. It’s like playing with the kid on your street who always claims that he’s actually immune to your power and actually he has it too

If anything, I think people perceive democrats as the perpetual ruling class - it's why the news framing is always about what Democrats will do even when they're in the minority, it's why Roe getting overturned was Biden's fault. "Democrats are In Charge, everyone knows that"

Even heavy users are doing themselves a disservice because they don’t understand what is so offputting about it, so when they try to pitch it their arguments are uncompelling

Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Right, and that's where things like "don't bring an iced coffee" or "dress up" or "arrive early" come into play. It's not that it's impossible to get an offer if you brought one, it's that you're taking a risk for little upside.
020
Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
If the office has business casual attire, and you wear business casual and another candidate wears a suit, were you *wrong*? If you bring an iced coffee and another candidate doesn't, are you disqualified? Probably not but how they perceive you will be impacted
030
Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I feel like this falls into a lot of the discourse around job interviews, which is "there is a list of things that are neither disqualifying nor guaranteeing, but doing/not doing them will impact your chances, because 80% of candidates are 'good enough' and you're looking on the margins"

Isn't a "same-sex bathroom" the way we separate genders by bathroom??

The Sopranos (Seasons 2-6) could make the list based on their own dumb True Detective (Season 1) rule

Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Well, no, eg in WWII there are bad guys but the good guys are rarely purely good, and the bigger lesson is that "Germans inherently are an Evil People" is *also* the wrong lesson

Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
In that conflict yeah, but being serious one of the major lessons of the War is that there is no Good Ethnicity, and anyone can become a monster if the opportunity forces it. The horror of ethnic conflict is that it is meaningless

*learning about the Yugoslav wars* I can tell which the good ethnicity here was

I think a lot about the grant quote during the battle of the wilderness when some general came to tell him that Lee was attacking and he said (paraphrased) “will you shut the fuck up and just fight him, he’s not magic” and I think Dems would do well to internalize that against republicans

Especially because she is talking about a compromise for funding usaid, an agency that was illegally unfunded and destroyed! There was a law and they ignored it!

Knowing that they only got Bugs when Coyote v Acme was in post production makes the weaker parts of the movie make way more sense, because it means they stripped out a whole character/plotline in service of just *having* Bugs in the movie

I was already skeptical because the dentist who recommended it also said "and it's a good thing I caught this because I'm the only dentist at this practice licensed to do this procedure" and I went oh, yeah?

Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I had a dentist tell me that I needed 4 quadrant deep root scaling and planing, I said okay but only if insurance will cover it, insurance required an extra test as proof of need and upon seeing the results said "we ain't covering shit because you don't need this procedure"

The full trailer for You Can See Everything is out today. And my first thought is that it should be required that Nathan Fielder film for 48 hrs at every tech CEO’s home.

One time I saw the author of The Color of Law give a talk and someone asked how cities can help prevent gentrification and he basically said "do you not get that redlining was the restriction of private investment and gentrification is the investment?"

I think you gotta also break the borders between school districts and effectively make state-wide schooling districts so you don't let Poor City with Rich Suburb Town nextdoor maintain separate systems and revenue pools

Is your argument that farming is good or that it's really hard and specialized?
100
Proud Bureaucrat @peeinian420.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
The US government put in tremendous effort to create as many farms and homesteads as possible in the mid-1800s and less than a century later that model had been totally abandoned, in major part because it sucks shit for both consuming and producing
