@melaniemitchell.bsky.social Is it silly of me to assume that Altman & Co. decide to "slow down" AI development only because they have no idea how to advance it further now that they can't find any more training data?

Today, Japan celebrates Mountain Day for the tenth time. The kanji character for "eight" (八) looks like a mountain, 11 like two trees, so naturally August 11 became a new public holiday dedicated to: appreciating mountains. I just like that.
Panorama picture of the Ligurian Apennines in the hinterland of Genoa, Italy. Soft green hills of woods and Maquis shrubland lined with mule tracks and topped with forts built between and 18th and the 19th century. You see villages nested between the hills, and parts of Genoa by the coast, with a few container ships dotted across the sea.

How I wish I lived in a world where anything meant anything anymore. Where an 11,000 word article on how you sacrificed the lives of tens of thousands for your own personal gain would be a career-ender. How long would Watergate stay in the news today? Surely not long enough for Nixon to resign.

Elser was executed in Dachau, on April 9, 1945 - like many other prominent dissidents - as Hitler's regime collapsed. For years, Nazi propaganda and conspiracy theories obscured his legacy. But Georg Elser, acting alone, came closer than anyone to saving millions from war and genocide. (10/10)
Memorial plaque at the Gasteig Cultural Center in Munich unveiled on November 9, 1989, at the spot where the column was located. That's how long it took before Elser was finally recognized as the hero he was.

Two ways to misread satire: 1. Take it literally. 2. Dismiss the earnest within. The tenderness of "where her garments come together, where I used to lay my face" is still as tender. And that second half - when you listen to it today - you just can't help but feel it deep in your guts.

Americans love to tell each other that, if they had a time-machine, they'd kill baby Hitler. They say that because it's - conveniently - impossible. When their actual present-time government builds an actual concentration camp for immigrants, they can't even be bothered to show up to a protest.

In early 1939, Elser began gathering materials for his bomb. He stole explosives and detonators from a quarry where he worked and hid them in a false-bottom suitcase. In his parents' orchard, he tested prototypes, refining a timer mechanism to ensure precision. (5/10)
